Position Summary

The hiring salary for this position will be from the min to mid-point of the salary range.

The Electrician serves as the electrical trade’s expert for improvements to campus infrastructure and safety programs. The individual in this position performs corrective and preventive maintenance of campus electrical equipment and installs electrical systems in accordance with applicable county, state, and federal codes. Additionally, the Electrician assists during emergency situations (e.g., school closings, power outages, inclement weather conditions, bomb threats, etcetera).

The College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the College's staff and students.  The final candidate for this position will be subject to the following background checks:  Criminal History Check and Sex Offender Registry Check.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

30 % Responds to service calls.

  • Supply service to customers requesting electrical repairs or electrical installations.
50% Preventive Maintenance
  • Visual Inspections:
    • Check for any signs of damage, wear, or overheating in electrical panels, switchgear, transformers, and other equipment.
    • Look for loose connections, frayed wires, or corroded components.
    • Ensure that proper labeling is in place for circuit breakers, fuses, and switches.
    • Maintain cleanliness of all electrical spaces.
  • Electrical Panel Maintenance:
    • Tighten electrical connections to prevent overheating and reduce the risk of electrical faults.
    • Clean dust and debris from panels and equipment to maintain proper ventilation.
    • Verify that panel doors are secure and properly sealed.
  • Circuit Breakers and Fuses:
    • Test and exercise circuit breakers to ensure proper operation.
    • Check for any tripped breakers or blown fuses and replace them as necessary.
    • Inspect and clean contacts to maintain good electrical conductivity.
    • Inspect electrical components with infrared to ensure electrical components are functioning as design.
  • Grounding and Bonding:
    • Inspect grounding systems and connections for corrosion or damage.
    • Measure ground resistance to ensure it falls within acceptable limits.
    • Verify proper bonding between electrical equipment and grounding systems.
  • Transformers:
    • Inspect transformer oil levels and condition (if applicable) and perform oil sampling as required.
    • Check for any signs of leakage, overheating, or abnormal noise.
    • Verify that cooling systems (fans, radiators) are clean and operational.
  • Electrical Cables and Wiring:
    • Inspect cables for any signs of wear, damage, or insulation deterioration.
    • Verify cable connections are tight and properly secured.
    • Check cable routing to ensure it complies with safety standards.
  • Emergency Exit Lighting:
    • Test emergency exit lighting systems regularly, including battery backup.
    • Replace batteries or bulbs as necessary.
  • Power Quality:
    • Monitor power quality parameters such as voltage, current, and frequency.
    • Check for harmonics, voltage sags, or other disturbances.
    • Inspect surge protection devices and ensure their proper functioning.
  • Fire and Smoke Detection Systems:
    • Test fire alarm and smoke detection systems regularly.
    • Replace batteries, test alarm sounders, and check system functionality.
    • Inspect and clean smoke detectors and other components.
  • Electrical Safety Equipment:
    • Inspect and test safety equipment such as ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), residual current devices (RCDs), and arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs).
    • Verify that safety labels and warning signs are in place and legible.
  • Emergency Lighting:
  1. Test and inspect all building emergency lighting for proper operation.
  2. Replace faulty or malfunctioning emergency lighting as needed to support life safety requirements.
    • Ensure all emergency lighting fixtures are clean and free from obstruction.
  • Emergency Generator and Associated Equipment:
    • Test and operate emergency generator to ensure proper operation.
    • Document voltage and amperage output.
    • Inspect and test wiring and wiring blocks to ensure proper connections.
    • Test and inspect transfer switch for proper operation.
    • Inspect and test wiring and wiring blocks in transfer switch for proper connections.
    • Perform annual building power shutdown to confirm that generator and transfer switch are performing as design to support life safety requirements.
    • Perform generator yearly load bank testing to ensure generator is working to its full capacity.
    • Review manual for other detailed preventive maintenance to be performed.
  • Elevator Inspection and Testing:
    • Perform monthly inspection and testing for proper operation of all campus elevators.
    • Inspect and test emergency elevator phones to ensure phone is connecting to the emergency operator.
    • Supervise elevator contractor on preventive maintenance and repairs.
    • Organize and manage yearly elevator state inspections with elevator contractor, life safety contractor, and third-party inspector.
  • Other related duties as assigned to support campus operations.
10% Event Support
  • Supply necessary power for event function.
  • Properly secure all electrical trip hazards.
  • Pre-check and repair all lighting to support event.
  • Verify all electrical safety precautions are in effect. 
  • Some events require evening and weekend support.
  • Assist in snow removal and in climate weather.
10% Administration Responsibilities
 
  • Ensure clear communications are understood between the site Superintendent and FCL Coordinator.
  • Perform project management for complex projects throughout CSM campuses.
  • Assist with obtaining quotes from electrical contractors to complete electrical needs.
  • Oversee and manage electrical contractors to complete electrical needs throughout the campuses.
  • Provide support to customers, contractors and team members through telephone and emails.
  • Submit electrical permits for items that fall outside of utility exemptions.
  • Perform and complete work orders and documentation work performed on the Asset Essential system.

Additional Duties:
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Training

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent to.
  • Experience in electrical design and construction. 
  • Experience in cost estimating for construction.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal codes for electrical installations and contracting.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Certificate of completion from electrical institution.

Licenses, Certifications, or Additional Requirements:
  • Journeyman electrician license or a license equal to, required. Master’s electrician license preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years working in the electrical trades.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Ability to proficiently read and interpret schematics and blueprints.   
  • Thorough knowledge of the proper use and care of hand tools associated with the trade.  
  • Insurability under the college vehicle liability insurance plan.
  • The knowledge and understanding of electrical codes.
  • The ability to perform electrical trade requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a relatively harsh, loud, hot, or cold environments.
