Montgomery College has an immediate need for a full-time Financial Aid Specialist. The position is located in Takoma Park. The typical work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00pm This is a non-exempt, bargaining, grade 25 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. One (1) day of telework may be granted based on the needs of the unit.
The Financial Aid Specialist will perform administrative and technical activities of financial aid programs. Duties encompass a variety of processes and methods. Decisions require judgment regarding possible courses of action based on established guidelines. Follow established office procedures and assist counselors.
Contacts are with college faculty, staff, current and prospective students and family representatives, general public, external agencies including lending institutions and government agencies.

Duties include but are not limited to:
- Advise students and their family representatives regarding financial aid regulations, application policies and procedures, methods used to determine eligibility, specific program requirements and limits, disbursement and appeal procedures, requirements for continued eligibility, and related financial matters.
- Assist students in completing the application process.
- Evaluate financial aid applications and determine financial aid eligibility in accordance with state, federal and institutional policies governing financial aid.
- Award financial aid to eligible students using established guidelines.
- Exceptions to policies and regulations are escalated to higher level financial aid workers.
- May facilitate financial literacy sessions.
- May facilitate and/or participate in program specific or financial aid outreach activities.
- Maintain statistical data and review generated reports.
- May supervise student workers.
Required Qualifications
- Associate degree and three (3) years of experience working in a student Financial Aid Office or the equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Customer service experience with a thorough knowledge of techniques for public contact.
- The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
- Working knowledge of current Student Financial Aid Office policies and procedures, state and federal financial aid regulations and policies, and institutional policies governing financial aid.
- Working knowledge of one or more of the following programs: loans, work study or other federal or state program.
- Ability to perform needs analysis and prepare package aid to students.
- Ability to evaluate applications for financial aid and interpret and apply complex regulations.
- Skill in the use of student financial aid data management systems.
Hiring Range: $27.68 - $35.98 per hour. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $44.27 per hour.
