The Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine (APM) and the Department of Surgery (Surgery) are major clinical academic departments of UW Medicine, providing services to the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC), Seattle Children's Hospital (SCH), Harborview Medical Center (HMC) Veterans Affairs & Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHC), Northwest Hospital (NWH), Valley Medical Center (VMC) and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). The departments collectively employ approximately 900 faculty, residents, fellows and staff; Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine alone employs 245 clinical and research faculty members, 110 residents, 38 Postdoctoral Scholars and ACGME Fellows, 90 staff members, and 115 affiliated clinical faculty members.

Because the two departments have very different cultures and clinical/technical needs, this position requires some level of discretion and flexibility to satisfy sometimes competing requests. There is an emphasis on flexibility within this role, since this individual must be able to turn their attention and expertise quickly to whatever part of the web portfolio needs attention. Further, they will need to determine best practices from both departments and in some cases change the Department of Surgery practices; in others the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine. They must be able to understand and adapt to two cultures, not alienate staff or faculty in either Department, be available when needed and ensure that best practices and sound principles are followed throughout.

Position Dimensions and Impact to the University:
The Web Computing Specialist has important responsibilities in achieving a high reliability and availability service approach to managing critical department web infrastructure and sites in a demanding in an educational setting.
The TECHdesk team aligns practices and procedures for multiple IT services in both APM and Surgery.
As the web architecture resource for both departments, it should be the goal of the person in this position to leverage web development, training, and infrastructure investments such that there is maximum benefit to both departments. We work to align web projects with the standards of the UW and UW Medicine, while also operating within the APM/Surgery web governance framework. We should deviate from UW and UW Medicine design and infrastructure standards only to the extent necessary to meet the unique needs of the departments.
