Title Open Rank Faculty Position in Soft Materials
School Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Department/Area Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering
Position Description
The John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at Harvard University seeks applicants for a position at either the tenure-track or tenured rank in the area of Soft Materials, with an expected start date of July 1, 2022. We welcome candidates interested in experimental soft matter science and engineering, broadly defined, whose backgrounds can include materials science, mechanical, chemical and bioengineering, physics, or chemistry.

We are seeking candidates who have a record of innovative experimental work, a vision for an original research program, and an interest in collaborating across multiple disciplines at the University.  Candidates should have enthusiasm for teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses in their own and related fields.

Examples of the research areas we envisage include: synthesis of polymers, elastomers, or hydrogels; synthesis of materials using synthetic biology, or aided by machine learning; design of soft materials or complex fluids, and their characterization using techniques including advanced rheology or micro-rheology; design, synthesis, processing, and/or characterization of soft functional materials including those with electrical or optical properties aimed at specific device applications. Other fields of innovative soft materials research will also be considered.

Materials research at Harvard has always been highly interdisciplinary. Inside SEAS, it is centered in the areas of Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Applied Physics. It has strong links to Bioengineering, Applied Mathematics, and Applied Computation, as well as to the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, and the Biological Sciences. This interdisciplinarity has been fostered for many years by a thriving Materials Research Science and Engineering Center.  Information about current faculty, research, and educational programs at SEAS is available at https://www.seas.harvard.edu.

SEAS values diversity among its faculty, is committed to building a culturally diverse intellectual community, and strongly encourages applications from women and underrepresented minorities.
Basic Qualifications
A doctorate or terminal degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field is required by the expected start date.
Additional Qualifications
Special Instructions
Required application documents include a cover letter, CV, a statement of research interests, a teaching/advising statement (describing teaching philosophy and practices), and up to three representative papers. In addition, we ask for a statement describing efforts to encourage diversity, inclusion, and belonging, including past, current, and anticipated future contributions in these areas.
Candidates for a tenure-track position are also required to submit names and contact information for 3-5 referees. At least one letter must come from someone who has not served as the candidate’s undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral advisor.
Candidates are asked to apply by December 15, 2021, but we will continue to review applications until the position is filled.
