Director of Development Knowledge Management (Location Flexible)

Reporting to the Senior Director of National Foundation & Corporate Partnership, the Director of Development Knowledge Management is responsible for building and executing a knowledge management strategy to equip Year Up fundraisers with the information they need to achieve their goals. The Director of Development Knowledge Management will lead implementation of this work in the short-run to address immediate priorities while building the long-run roadmap for knowledge sharing. The Director of Development Knowledge Management will partner closely with fundraising leadership, staff from other functional teams, and frontline solicitors. They will create new and more consistent linkages that yield information flow and feedback loops in a manner that will allow our fundraisers to quickly access the details they need to position our mission in front of donors accurately and comprehensively. The Director may be asked to lead training initiatives in partnership with subject matter experts, curate or translate detailed aspects of the Year Up strategy for multiple external audiences, and use strong judgment and pattern recognition to determine which fundraisers need to know what by when, as well as design and implement systems and processes to those ends.

As an ideal candidate for this role, you will bring a passion for our mission and an interest in leveraging your experience partnering with leadership, managing internal relationships, and synthesizing information for multiple stakeholders to support increased giving from all types of donors. You will have significant experience building systems and processes, interpreting data, anticipating colleagues’ needs, and will understand fundraising campaigns and the major and principle gift cycle. To be successful in this position, you will be skilled in creating strategy and action plans based on data and research and possess a customer-service approach to working with frontline fundraisers. In addition, you will be highly detail-oriented, excellent project management and follow-through, and practical experience in collaborating across functions and geographies.

The Director of Development Knowledge Management will also interact with students as a mentor, group facilitator, and advocate, participating in building a positive educational environment.


Knowledge Management

  • Drive increased information flow from other functional teams to all development staff to support their efforts to raise financial support for the organization
  • Interpret and translate organizational strategies and campaign priorities into a range of formats that fundraisers can access and use in external meetings
  • Stay abreast of key organizational decisions and shifts; design and disseminate new resources and/or hold trainings related to these decisions and shifts
  • Translate, codify, and curate organizational priorities for different external audiences; disseminate to solicitors in correct dosage based on gift segment or amount, and timing considerations
  • Craft long-run road map for Knowledge Management function in close concert with fundraising leadership
  • Provide input on long-run internal tech-backed knowledge systems
  • Personally support and promote our culture of feedback
  • Other duties as assigned

Site Team/Learning Community Member

  • Serve as a coach/mentor for a small number of current students
  • Join and sometimes facilitate weekly group sessions with students
  • Participate in staff meetings and trainings


  • 6+ years of professional work experience in grant writing, sales support, or research, preferably in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial nonprofit environment
  • Skilled at building relationships across teams and geographies; managing through influence; building systems and processes; improving on systems and processes in an iterative manner
  • Donor database experience, with a preference for Salesforce.com experience
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office required, specifically Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience with fundraising or development operations required
  • Exceptional customer service skills with excellent follow through
  • A professional and resourceful style with the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative and manage multiple tasks and projects at one time
  • An unwavering attention to detail and aptitude for project management required
  • Flexibility, creativity, and willingness to learn and work on different tasks as needed
  • Excellent organizational and written skills
  • A passion for working with young adults, an unshakable belief in their potential, and a strong commitment to the mission of Year Up
  • Understanding of the Opportunity Divide and its drivers
