Essential Functions (Job Duties)
Job Duties for Research Assistant/Associate:
1. Perform laboratory based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research. Design and perform experiments, recruit participants for studies by developing surveys and interviewing candidates. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist staff with experiments/research protocols as required. Communicate with principal investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows on the status of research.
2. Collect and log laboratory results, clinical outcomes and/or survey data. Evaluate and perform data analysis using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated. Proofread and edit research data and documents to ensure accuracy.
3. Assist principal investigator with writing methods and summarizing/organizing data to be used in preparing and presenting presentations for professional, scientific and academic conferences and submittal to academic and scholarly peer-reviewed journals.
4. Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required. Order and organize required research supplies and records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.
5. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Job Duty for Research Associate:
1. Prepare and present presentations regarding research results for professional, scientific and academic conferences. Summarize and organize data results for submittal to academic and scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. Write scientific manuscripts and other documents for publication. Fact-check, proofread, and edit research documents to ensure accuracy.
Unique Duties
General Summary: Under the guidance of the Laboratory PI, performs cell biology and physiology research in the field of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis and metabolism, using modern biological research tools. Performs lab management duties.
Principal duties and responsibilities: The successful candidate will work on cell biology and physiology projects in the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics. The candidate will be expected to work independently on assigned projects or to carry out research activities under the supervision of senior personnel in the lab. The candidate will also be responsible for the management of the lab under the guidance of the laboratory PI. The ideal candidate will have experience in mouse models, biochemistry, cell biology and/or molecular biology, will be a highly motivated and very conscientious individual.
An estimated percentage of the breakdown of activities is as follows:
85% Research: Carries out research using the following techniques: mouse handling, breeding and phenotyping, Western blot, immunoprecipitation, immunohistochemistry, quantitative RT-PCR, RNA/protein purification, mammalian cell and tissue culture, buffer preparation. Perform data analysis and management. Keep lab record.
10% Lab management: maintenance of laboratory supplies and equipment.
5% Attends lab meetings and reads current journal articles pertaining to relevant projects.
Qualifications For Research Assistant/Associate:
1. Bachelor's degree in a related field of study, preferred. Requires advanced knowledge predominantly intellectual in character in a field of science or learning acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.
2. Human subject research related experience and small vertebrate animal research related experience required.
3. Ability to work independently, analyze, summarize and interpret research findings in reports and communicate results. Knowledge of scientific integrity principles. Excellent time management and organization skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment.
Qualifications for Research Associate:
Minimum two years experience
Preferred Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree or higher in biology or related field required for Research Assistant position. A PhD or equivalent in biology or related field required for Research Associate position.
Junior and senior applicants will be considered.
· Familiarity with the following techniques (or ability to quickly learn the techniques required): mouse handling and genotyping, Western blot, immunohistochemistry, DNA/RNA/protein purification, quantitative RT-PCR, mammalian cell and tissue culture.
· Ability to work independently and multitask.
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
