Position Description
The Department of Celtic Languages and Literatures, Harvard University, seeks to make a tenure-track, or possibly a tenured, appointment. Candidates must have excellent command of at least one Celtic language. We are open to applicants specializing in any period, and based in any discipline, with research and teaching interests in the cultures of the Celtic speaking lands. 
The appointee will teach and advise undergraduate and postgraduate students and will be expected to develop innovative courses at both levels.  The department provides postgraduate training leading to the PhD in Celtic Languages and Literatures and offers elective courses to undergraduates, some of whom complete a Secondary Field in Celtic.
Harvard’s diverse undergraduates are increasingly interested in courses that reach across cultural, linguistic and chronological boundaries to address large questions. The successful candidate will be asked to design undergraduate courses that address this interest. Applicants should familiarize themselves with the offerings of Harvard’s Degree Program in Folklore and Mythology; Committee on Ethnicity, Migration, and Rights; General Education Program; and Freshman Seminar Program, and should expect to collaborate with one or more of these programs in building the increasingly multidisciplinary curriculum of Harvard College.
Promise of excellence in both teaching and research is essential, as well as a doctorate conferred by the time the appointment begins. The appointee will also undertake administrative responsibilities, commensurate with rank, in the Celtic Department and will be expected to participate in the interdepartmental and interdisciplinary intellectual life of the Division of Arts and Humanities and the wider scholarly community at Harvard and beyond.
Basic Qualifications
Excellent command of at least one Celtic language. Doctorate required by the time the appointment begins.

At least one letter must come from someone who has not served as the candidate’s​ undergraduate thesis advisor, chair of the dissertation committee, or primary advisor in a postdoctoral fellowship. Candidates for a tenured position need not submit reference letters at this stage; simply skip the reference page of the application.
