Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Under general supervision, teach college level courses in chemistry and perform related work including, but not limited to, developing teaching strategies, instructional materials and methods which: 1) use current technology in instruction where appropriate; 2) integrate instruction of appropriate quantitative/logical thinking skills into course content; 3) develop and assess the competencies and skills for the course student learning outcomes; 4) address the learning needs of community college students; and 5) develop and teach courses utilizing online, hybrid, and/or other distance delivery formats as needed.
  2. Coordinate scheduling of chemistry and biochemistry classes, determine needed supplies for laboratory classes.
  3. Collaborate with departmental faculty and other University faculty to ensure chemistry classes, the Associate in Science in Natural Science degree, other relevant degree and certificate programs, and curricula are up to date and in alignment.
  4. Develop and maintain an approved program of professional self-development; prepare and revise course outlines; develop curriculum; develop alternate delivery systems for courses where appropriate; update and assess Student Learning Outcomes; and develop appropriate assessment instruments.
  5. Teaching assignments may include distance education, evenings, weekends, early college classes at local high schools, and/or other off-campus assignments.
  6. Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught.
  7. Participate in departmental, faculty and administrative committees, community service, in-service training and assessment activities.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned, which may include, but not limited to, managing departmental budget, collecting data for program review, preparing reports, providing oversight of chemical waste management (disposal and storage), teaching community service courses, promoting chemistry in the community, supervising undergraduate research and student internships, and/or providing assistance as a mentor to students and peer mentors.
  9. Independently plan, organize and carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments.
  10. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Master's degree in Chemistry.
  2. All minimum qualifications must be from a regionally accredited institution and met by the effective date of appointment.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. in Chemistry or closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  2. Demonstrated ability and/or experience to teach lecture and laboratory courses in chemistry at the university or college level.
  3. Successful teaching experience in community colleges as substantiated by both student and peer evaluations.
  4. Experience in curriculum development, including online and/or hybrid instruction.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work with students, peers, and staff.
  6. Experience in conducting course level assessment of student learning outcomes, analyzing relevant data, and utilizing the results to improve instruction.
  7. Demonstrated ability to serve as a mentor to students engaged in project-based research and/or internships.
  8. Ability and/or successful experience collaborating with community organizations and/or relevant industry to promote student learning outside of the classroom.
  9. Knowledge and understanding of student centered learning and the community college philosophy.
  10. Knowledge and understanding of Windward Community College's mission.
