Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Research

The Office of Research and Economic Development seeks nominations for the position of Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Research for Interdisciplinary Research, Strategic Initiatives, and Infrastructure. The Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Research (SAVCR) position will report to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development and serve as the University’s Deputy Chief Research Officer.

The SAVCR will provide faculty the opportunity to focus on scholarly and creative activities that significantly transform their research programs and help them make notable contributions to their respective fields. This individual will be instrumental in efforts to define strategic initiatives to drive creative and scholarly works; develop and identify opportunities for interdisciplinary research across the campus, including the UM System’s NextGen Precision Health Initiative; build collaborations across all disciplines; coordinate faculty recruitment in strategic research areas among departments and colleges as outlined by research growth plans; and drive new strategic initiatives to enhance MU’s research mission as a member of the Association of American Universities. 

Key Performance Responsibilities :

The SAVCR and Deputy Chief Research Officer will serve as the primary advisor to the VCRED, represent and assume authority when VCRED is not available, establish and oversee success of organized research units (ORUs) and provide administrative oversight of the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration. The SAVCR will develop and manage new and existing university centers as well as the core research facilities, and play an integral role in helping the VCRED anticipate and plan for new infrastructure needs of the university.  The SAVCR will manage and allocate research equipment and space for core facilities, work across the university to identify and develop collaborative efforts in pursuit of extramural funding opportunities, and advise campus administrators in prioritizing research efforts by determining current and future research capacity needs in specific areas.  The SAVCR will be relied upon to forecast opportunities for success prior to committing resources, and to conduct campus-wide research development activities. 



Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D., D.V.M., or M.D. degree with postdoctoral training or equivalent training in a related discipline. Experience as a research investigator, and at least two years of experience in research administration in an Office of Research at a research-intensive university.
