JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A Research Technologist-Level 1 position is available at The Pennsylvania State University Department of Food Science, University Park PA, in the laboratory of Dr. Edward G. Dudley.  The successful applicant with join a collaborative team including the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the US Food and Drug Administration, and 20 other laboratories across the United States to support efforts to monitor wastewaters associated with agricultural settings for SARS-CoV-2.  Specifically, the Technician will: 

1. Evaluate and confirm existing methods for sequencing SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater samples and develop new methods where there are gaps

2. Detect variants of interest/concern in communities with high concentrations of food and agricultural workers

3. Report variant results back to the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research to inform their vaccine applications reviews and to FDA’s 21FORWARD program to access risk across the US food supply chain 

This is an excellent opportunity to engage in an impactful project with a diverse academic, state government, and federal team.  This is a limited term position funded for one year from the date of hire with excellent possibility of refunding.

Typically requires a Bachelors Degree plus 1 year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicants should have a B.S. in a microbiology or virology related discipline with prior experience in nucleic acid extraction, PCR, and RT-PCR.  Applicants must be able to provide evidence that all requirements have been met prior to the effective date of hire.  Other strengths include the ability to work independently and collaboratively with other laboratory postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduates as needed.  Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are essential.

The Pennsylvania State University is located in central Pennsylvania within the Allegheny Mountain Range. The region enjoys the advantages of an active mid-sized college town, and has outdoor activities including hiking, mountain and road biking, and fly fishing within minutes of campus.

This position will require successful completion of standard background checks.
