Position Summary
The Department of Mathematics invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track annual Assistant Professor of Mathematical Analysis position. 
This position will engage in teaching, research, and service in the Department of Mathematics.  The area of research is mathematical analysis, broadly defined.  Assistant Professors in the College of Science and the Department of Mathematics are expected to demonstrate effectiveness in teaching, advising and other institutional activities; achievement in scholarship and creative activity that establishes the individual as a significant contributor to the field or profession; and an appropriate balance of institutional and professional service. All professorial positions are expected to make significant contributions to undergraduate and graduate education.

Position Duties

Specific Activities:
 
55% -Teaching, Advising, and Other Instructional Activities: 
Teaching: 
  • Teach four to five quarter-long courses in Mathematics per academic year (averaging 9 quarter-long courses over a two-year period) at the undergraduate and graduate level. 
  • Contribute to seminars as appropriate.  
Advising and other instructional activities:
  • Participate on M.S. and Ph.D. graduate committees. 
  • Advise and support students in their academic programs, research, and career directions as appropriate. 
  • Supervise teaching assistants as assigned. 
  • Mentor and support students in research projects, internships, or seminars and in the writing and publication of their results. 
  • Participate in course and degree assessment and curricular and instructional development. 
  • Engage in activities that advance and promote student success across different demographic groups.  

35% -Scholarship and Creative Activity: 
  • Develop a program of research and scholarship that is recognized at the national and international level.
  • Disseminate the research results by publication in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, presentations at professional meetings, and by other means appropriate for the discipline.  
  • Seek extramural funding for research including the support of graduate assistant stipends, travel, summer salary, and other costs of the research program. 
  • Collaborate with colleagues on and off campus as appropriate in the development of the scholarly work.  

10% – Service: 
  • Serve on Departmental, College or University committees as assigned. 
  • Service to the profession such as refereeing, editing, committee work, organizing conferences or sessions, and similar activities. 
  • Service to the public through presentations or outreach programs as appropriate. 
  • Maintain a balance between service to the institution and to the profession. 
  • Engage in efforts to attract students to mathematics from underrepresented minorities.  
Minimum/Required Qualifications
  • PhD in Mathematics, or related field, by September 15, 2022.  
  • Research activity in the area of Analysis.  
  • Demonstrated ability or significant potential to develop, conduct and disseminate high-quality research.  
  • Demonstrated ability or significant potential for teaching excellence and commitment to student success that can benefit the graduate and undergraduate programs at OSU.  
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.  
  • Tolerance for diverse ideas within the academy, including those different from one’s own.  
  • Commitment to free inquiry based on evidence and criticism.  
  • This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions. 
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in Mathematics.  
  • Demonstrated interest in pursuing external funding for research and student support. 
  • One to three years of postdoctoral experience.  
  • Demonstrated interest in outreach and engagement with the general public.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in diverse environments. 
  • Research interests including, but not limited to Partial Differential Equations, Fluid Dynamics, Harmonic Analysis, Infinite-Dimensional Dynamical Systems and applications of techniques of Mathematical Analysis to study physical, biological, and societal phenomena.
