The Postdoctoral Research Associate will study G × E stress interactions on growth, physiology, and productivity as well as conventional and alternative systems for insect control. The project will involve grafted and ungrafted tomato cultivars in conventional and organic systems. In addition to the benefits offered by Texas A&M University, Texas A&M at Qatar provides full-time employees with a robust package of incentives, allowances, and benefits based on employees’ experience, title, and family situation. Faculty and staff receive either furnished housing or a monthly housing allowance, as well as a monthly transportation allowance and an annual allowance to cover the cost of travel to their home country. Texas A&M at Qatar also covers private school tuition for Pre-K through Grade 12 for up to 4 child dependents, or provides an allowance for home schooling. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills
  • Proven organizational skills
  • Strong familiarity with environmental stress physiology research equipment (gas exchange analyzer, soil/root/plant sensors) to collect plant phenotypic/genotypic data

Other Requirements or Other Factors:

  • This position will be under the supervision of Dr. Daniel I. Leskovar, Professor in Vegetable Physiology at Texas A&M AgriLife, Uvalde, Texas, in close coordination with Dr. Bing Guo, Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University at Qatar
  • This position is NOT located in the United States. The selected candidate must be willing to relocate to Doha, Qatar.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • PhD degree in horticulture, agronomy, plant physiology, entomology or closely related field.
  • 1-2 years in scientific research
  • Experience in the use of data loggers, image processing tools, handling scientific data, and statistical analysis
  • Experience in tomato grafting techniques and grafted transplants
  • Experience in LED lighting for production
  • Experience in monitoring for plant stress, nutrition, health and biocontrol of pests
  • Experience with planting, harvesting, storage and shipping

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and skills in tomato greenhouse production, research data collection and scientific experiments, and in writing reports
  • Familiarity with conventional and organic fertilizers and pesticides, including applications

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, conduct, monitor and participate in a collaborative tomato greenhouse research project aimed at increasing tomato production efficiency by a minimum of 25%.
  • Monitoring and quantifying insect in response to genotypes and environmental modifications in order to decrease major tomato pests (leafminers, whiteflies, thrips).
  • Harvest plant samples from the experimental plots which requires the ability to lift heavy weight
  • Operate and maintain laboratory and field equipment
  • Organize samples in the greenhouse or lab for growth, mineral or biochemical analysis
  • Use of equipment (gas exchange analyzer, soil/root/plant sensors, chlorophyll fluorescence, etc.) including data loggers and image processing tools
  • Utilize statistical analysis and generate narrative and graphical reports and perform other related duties as required
  • Evaluate data and summarize results for preparation in peer reviewed publications as well as presentations in growers field day, workshops, and/or horticultural professional societies
