JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Kapur lab at Penn State University (University Park campus) is currently seeking a qualified, highly motivated, and organized Research Technologist to join the team. Our team broadly focuses on One Health in low- and middle-income countries, including India, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Ethiopia to just name a few. The team is interested in developing the tools and laying the framework to accelerate control strategies for zoonotic diseases like Tuberculosis, Anthrax and Brucellosis in Asia and Africa as well as viral diseases including Newcastle Disease, PPR, and Covid-19.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute basic molecular biology, microbiology and immunology experiments, including but not limited to bacterial culture, DNA/RNA extraction, plasmid isolation, cloning, bacterial transformation, PCR, RT-PCR, ELISA, etc. according to standard procedures, make observations and interpret findings
  • Record all experiments, data and findings in detail in lab notebooks and maintain electronic records
  • Analyze, interpret, and present data at group meetings and externally
  • Organize and store all samples, reagents and chemical substances in accordance with relevant environmental health and safety guidelines at Penn State
  • Regular maintenance of equipment and assist with ordering of laboratory supplies
  • Participate in and help implement specific study protocols (IBC, IACUC, IRBs) and keep track of required modifications
  • Train and supervise graduate and undergraduate students as necessary
  • Assist faculty and Postdoctoral Researchers with routine research lab functions

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in biology or relevant field
  • Experience in data recording and basic Microbiology lab skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (especially Excel) and database systems
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Position requires attention to detail

This is a limited-term position funded for one year from the start date, with an excellent chance of renewal.
