Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible management experience with at least 3 years supervisory experience. Experience with remote supervision a plus.
  • Communication skills, problem solving, strategic thinking, decision making and interpersonal skills required
  • Strong relationship building and communication skills with the ability to build trust and motivate staff and volunteers to perform at their best to achieve strategic business outputs
  • Ability to think through problems, make inclusive decisions, and lead others through complex situations

Techinical/Other:

  • Experience with electronic advocacy communications
  • Experience engaging constituents through social media channels a plus
  • Commitment to the mission, vision, cultural values, and expectations of the National MS Society
  • Strong knowledge MS Office computer software including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point

Estimated hiring compensation range for this role is $95,000 - $115,000 annually. Final offers will be based on candidate geographic location and consider career experience and may vary from this range due to these and other factors.

Position Summary

The AVP, Advocacy & Policy is a leadership position requiring strong skills in policy development, strategic thinking, legislative analysis, problem solving and relationship building.
The AVP, Advocacy and Activist Engagement is a leadership position requiring strong skills in strategic thinking, problem solving and relationship building. This position leads the Society’s outreach and engagement of activists to increase the Society’s capacity for activism and advance our policy agenda. The position will develop a comprehensive engagement strategy for activists at all levels of government. The position also has responsibility for contributing to the leadership and management of the Advocacy team.

Essential Functions:

1.Activist Engagement & Outreach (30%)

    • Provide leadership support in development of strategy for increased, year-round engagement of grassroots activists
    • Lead development of multi-year plan for continued growth of District Activist Leader program
    • Provide leadership to staff to maximize the engagement and contribution of Government Relations Advisory Committee members
    • Provide leadership to staff to implement best practices for activist experience at Public Policy Conference and State Action Day events
    • Provide leadership and direction in development of plan for identification of activists to serve on key federal and state policy related committees and task forces, internally and externally
    • Develop and implement strategies and tactics to identify and successfully engage Grasstop activists at all levels of government
    • Provide leadership in development of ladders of activist engagement and ensure staff have resources to develop moves management plans for activists

2. State Advocacy Responsibilities (25%)

  • Serve as Society advocacy representative in states with vacancies, directing a comprehensive advocacy program;
  • As capacity permits, serve as primary advocacy representative in either “home” state or other assigned state(s)
    • Create advocacy campaigns to address issues affecting people living with MS
    • Engage volunteers to inform and advance advocacy campaigns
    • Develop, nurture and maintain relationships with legislators
    • Develop, nurture and maintain relationships with coalitions and other partner

3. Leadership (15%)

    • Serve on Advocacy and Healthcare Access leadership team and participate in team leadership and management planning and development.
    • Key role in Public Policy Conference and other department and organization functions and events
    • Staff, lead and support work teams to move priority work forward
    • Serve as a Society spokesperson on relevant issues affecting people with MS

4. Communications and Data (15%)

    • Develop processes to collect data to support advocacy initiatives and report on impact.
    • Partner with AVP, Advocacy & Activist Engagement to ensure policy work reflects the perspectives and experiences of people with MS.
    • Ensure that our policy priorities are being consistently communicated; utilizing existing vehicles and developing additional resources as needed

5. Staff Supervision (10%)

    • Responsible for the hiring, onboarding, and continued development of direct reports
    • Conduct regular check-ins to monitor progress, provide feedback, and offer guidance and support where needed to ensure staff is fully supported in their role
    • Ensures staff have the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary to perform job duties effectively as well as opportunities for professional development
    • Coach and collaborate on goal-setting and professional development plans and conduct formal and informal performance conversations
    • Hold staff accountable to the cultural values of the organization and ensure they follow Society operating principles
