Job Description

The Vice President for Institutional Advancement provides a strategic fundraising vision and subsequently leads and manages all philanthropic functions – both frontline and operational.
The Vice President is responsible for developing, administering, and monitoring, all advancement functions and private and public sector fundraising, including annual giving programs, alumni relations and fundraising, corporate and foundation relations, major gifts, and campaign leadership. Also will provide leadership for Marketing, College Events, and the Real Estate Foundation.
Reporting to the President and serving as a member of the President’s Cabinet, the Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VPIA) is Chief Advancement Officer and serves as a liaison to the Tidewater Community College Educational Foundation.

  • Increase foundation giving by implementing, leading and monitoring a comprehensive fundraising program which incorporates, but is not limited to major donors and planned giving as a part of a multi-year comprehensive campaign, annual fund giving, alumni relations, and corporate and foundation giving.
  • Ensure the college-wide development operation is fully integrated with the college’s priorities and that advancement activities are aligned with the college’s long-term strategic plan.
  • Work closely with the President in all phases of advancement and campaign leadership activities.
  • Serve as a passionate and prominent face of fundraising throughout the organization and the community.
  • Oversee the building and continual refreshment of active prospect portfolios for all fundraisers.
  • Direct and oversee strategic planning and execution of college and presidential special events.
  • Provides overall management and leadership for the operational areas of Marketing and College Events.
  • Work strategically with Marketing and Communications to ensure the development of engaging promotional and solicitation materials necessary to support the college’s advancement activities.
  • Provides oversight to the Freedom of Information Officer (FOI).
  • Represents the college as the liaison to the Real Estate Foundation, provides direction, planning and alignment between the college and the Real Estate Foundation.
  • Provides leadership, management, and supervision of staff in the college’s Office of Institutional Advancement.
  • Enhance the quality of alumni programming and advance a robust alumni relations effort that provides meaningful engagement and service opportunities; expand the alumni audience, a critical component in TCC’s future.
  • In partnership with Finance, ensure ethical and appropriate financial administration of contributed income, including overseeing the donor and prospect records, gift processing and donor stewardship.
  • Interprets and assures compliance with policies and procedures of the college, VCCS, and regulations of state and federal government.
  • Understand and demonstrate the importance of implementing programs that underscore diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the President.
Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated major gifts and/or campaign experience with a solid record of achieving or exceeding goals.
  • A record of progressive leadership positions in institutional advancement, with a preference for higher education experience.
  • Strong management skills, both strategic and operational, and a demonstrated ability to build, manage, and motivate an effective team.
  • A strong track record with major gifts, capital campaigns, planned giving, annual giving, special events, and constituent relations.
  • Strategic planning and decision-making capabilities based on research, analysis, and sound judgment to be applied toward the development of an innovative advancement program with the leadership skills to ensure its successful implementation.
  • The ability to build collaborative relationships with both the campus community and a diverse alumni and constituent base.
  • Self-confidence, integrity, and a flexible leadership and personal style that will earn the respect and attention of the campus community.
  • Superior communication skills to express verbally and in writing the college’s institutional identity and fundraising goals with clarity, passion and persuasion.
  • Ability to ensure dynamic processes in all phases of donor qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • A Master’s degree, with a doctorate degree preferred, from a regionally accredited college or university.
