Academic Advisor (12 month)

ACADEMIC ADVISOR I (12 month)
Primary Function : Supports student enrollment and retention by advising students on their academic and career goals. Assists in academic planning and the process of financial aid acquisition. Monitors students’ academic progress and provides proactive support in a nurturing environment that encourages student retention and completion. Serves as a member of the Advising and Transfer Services Office, working to achieve the goals of the Student Affairs Division.
Responsibilities : (1) Provides educational planning/academic advisement for assigned students, with a focus on specified academic programs and the creation of an academic plan from initial registration through completion; (2) Provides assistance with enrollment/registration and with navigating institutional requirements; makes referrals to Counseling and other NCC services as necessary; (3) Interprets placement information to determine developmental education needs in reading, writing and mathematics; (4) Collaborates with faculty and academic departments within Areas of Study as assigned by Director of Advising & Accommodation Services to stay current on program requirements and advising trends; (5) Manages a case load of assigned students as determined by the Director of Advising & Accommodation Services and develops a meaningful rapport with advisees. Conducts proactive outreach and monitors assigned students’ progress toward completing their educational goals; (6) Employs technology-enabled advising tools such as degree audits, academic planners, early-alert and communication tools (e.g., email, text, live chat), and instructs students how to use online and self-service academic planning and career development tools. Keeps abreast of current trends and best practices in advising and technology based advising tools; (7) Conducts outreach (e.g., phone calls, staffing tables) to students in support of retention-based programming efforts, and facilitates/participates in workshops and events designed to assist students with orientation, career exploration resources, transferring, academic planning, use of support services, etc.; (8) Will need to work flexible hours including evening and weekends on occasion; (9) Participates in and facilitates advisor training as prescribed by the NCC advisor training model; (10) Participates in and leads assessment initiatives related to the efficacy of academic advisement; (11) Performs other duties as may be assigned from time to time by leadership.
Organizational Relationship : (1) Reports to the Director of Advising & Accommodation Services, Associate Dean Student Services (Monroe), or other Student Affairs management as assigned for performance of assigned responsibilities; (2) Works closely with faculty, counselors, and other Student Affairs and Academic Affairs staff; (3) Functions as active member of the Student Affairs Division; (4) Serves the Bethlehem, Monroe, Fowler and Online communities, as necessary. May need to change primary office or campus location to meet student demand as determined by the Director of Advising & Accommodation Services.
Performance Standards : Performance in this position is considered satisfactory when: (1) mutually agreed upon objectives have been attained within a specified time frame; (2) responsibilities of the position have been carried out at a level consistent with performance objectives; (3) effective cooperative relationships exist with faculty, administrators, and other student affairs staff.
Qualifications : (1) Education : Bachelors degree required from a regionally accredited college/university, Masters preferred. (2) Skills, Knowledge, Abilities : (a) excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; (b) ability to work with diverse students and staff; (c) computer skills with in depth knowledge of using popular MS applications (3) Experience : One year of experience in student advising function or related area in an educational setting, preferably at the post-secondary level.
