Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE: The Director of Student Success provides strategic leadership, direction, and supervision of student success functions including but not limited to onboarding of new students, student retention strategies, continuing student advising, services for special populations such as veterans, student life, career services, and graduation activities at Pine Technical and Community College (PTCC). The Director of Student Success also acts as the Compliance Officer in collaboration with the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. The incumbent prioritizes work to ensure students and staff are the focus for division success, and these efforts are measured for continuous improvement. Supervises, collaborates, and implements special projects for the college as well as develops and implements a positive public image for the institution and employees with local, regional, state, and national contacts.
  • Oversees registration support for new and continuing students, and exit processes for graduates and/or transfer students.

    • Provides leadership and direction to the college financial aid office including student employment work study opportunities.
    • Provides leadership and direction for transfer in and transfer out activities.
    • Provides leadership and direction for credit for prior learning activities including Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), military credit, and work experience.
    • Participates in the development and execution of the college Strategic Enrollment Management plan.
    • Provides leadership and direction for Testing Center services, including entrance testing, make-up testing, key assessment testing (i.e. NOCTI), and external industry testing.
    • Provides leadership and direction for Registrar’s Office including degree audit activities and the oversight of the evaluation, maintenance, storage, and retention of student records.
  • Directs student persistence and retention efforts at Pine Technical and Community College.
    • Provides leadership and direction to student success services including counseling, advising, veterans, accommodations, academic skills, career services, and library services to promote persistence and completion.
    • Provides leadership and direction for student life activities and sponsored events.
    • Conducts on-going evaluation of services for continuous improvement.
    • Monitors and reports on student academic success and relates findings to institution and system performance objectives.
    • Develops and encourages strategies to increase retention for all programs.
    • Coordinates and supervises the college efforts to provide cultural, recreational, and social experiences for students.
    • Encourages and develops opportunities for equity and inclusion of all students.
  • Directs student-related compliance processes.
    • Responds to concerns from students and others in a timely manner.
    • Serves as first level appeal authority for student services appeals.
    • Enforces the student code of conduct to include investigation, decision-making, and record management.
    • Leads PTCC Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT).
    • Serves as college point of contact for mandatory notifications to student population.
    • Serves as the PTCC Compliance Officer, ensuring compliance and reporting obligations are met for Title IV, Title IX, and the Clery Act.
    • Serves as institution investigator and/or decision-maker for college investigations.
  • Mentors, assists, evaluates, and effectively works with faculty and staff to develop the maximum possible creativity and performance in their positions.
    • Maintains terms and conditions of employment per employee contracts.
    • Assigns, organizes, schedules, and delegates work assignments to personnel.
    • Supervises and evaluates assigned employees using established performance appraisal procedures.
    • Responds to concerns from employees in a timely manner.
    • Monitors individual employee professional development plans.
    • Recruits, interviews, and recommends personnel for appointments, promotions, rewards, transfers, disciplines, and dismissals in the department.
    • Schedules and conducts departmental meetings to ensure a productive work environment.
    • Writes job descriptions, recommends and assists in salary development for all personnel supervised.
    • Supervises or oversees supervision and coordination of work study personnel assigned to Student Success division.
    • Conducts faculty (counselor and librarian) evaluations and provides feedback that ensures quality services for students.
    • Works with faculty and staff to encourage and develop opportunities for equity and inclusion in daily work activities and assignments.
  • Provide effective leadership for the Student Success division.
    • Provides leadership to all assigned student services areas maintaining alignment with the mission of the college and adherence to the college Strategic Plan.
    • Represents the college through membership in professional organizations.
    • Provides leadership in the HLC processes related to student success to ensure continued accreditation in cooperation with the VP of Academic and Student Affairs.
    • Champions continuous quality improvement.
  • Leads and manages administrative activities within assigned areas.
    • Assures compliance of Safety and Health regulations within the scope of responsibility.
    • Serves as a leader/member of college committees as assigned including the ASA Leadership Team and Curriculum Committee.
    • Maintains currency and complies with EEO, affirmative action, MinnState, PTCC, and other pertinent regulations.
    • Works with college academic affairs leadership on plans for student retention and completion strategies.
    • Coordinates, develops, approves, and administers contracts within assigned areas.
    • Represents the interests of student services in college-wide planning processes.
    • Develops and implements student success budgets in conjunction with CFO and VP of Academic and Student Affairs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required in education, social sciences, humanities, or related area from a regionally accredited college/university.

Professional Licensure/Certification:

Type and Length of Experience:
Minimum of five years’ experience with student services in higher education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor long and short-term plans.
  • Ability to manage change and transformation
  • Ability to coordinate the various priorities of a campus with administrative services, advancement, and external affairs personnel.
  • Ability to effectively analyze and administer budgets.
  • Ability to delegate and hold others responsible in a way that instills confidence and self-respect on the part of the employee.

Physical Requirements:
  • Occasional overnight travel
  • Frequent non-standard hours
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in education or related area from a regionally accredited college/university.

Professional Licensure/Certification:

Type and Length of Experience:
Seven years’ experience in student services and student life areas in a higher education environment. Demonstrated leadership experience in a vocational/ technical or community college.
Other Requirements
In accordance with the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities (Minnesota State) Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State’s vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
