Assistant Dean for Community Engagement, Equity, and Belonging

The Assistant Dean manages the Office of Community Engagement, Equity, and Belonging (CEEB). The Assistant Dean serves as a key advisor to all student services offices, supports the missions of Harvard Law School (HLS) student organizations, and provides support and programming that helps ensure that HLS’s 1,800 students feel connected to the larger HLS community and affinity in smaller environments. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Student Services.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

As Assistant Dean for Community Engagement, Equity, and Belonging you will:

  • Develop, implement, and refine programs supporting leaders of HLS Student Organizations and Journals, as well as oversee compliance of those organizations with all applicable University and Federal policies, procedures, and regulations.

  • Provide student organizations with guidance and advising including training, strategic planning, and financial oversight. Collaborate with leadership in the strategic planning and policy development for all matters related to student organizations.

  • Provide mentoring, support, and programming for historically underrepresented groups and first generation college/low income undergraduates and connects them with the resources necessary to thrive in an elite professional school environment.

  • Collaborate with HLS leadership team on all questions bearing on the overall climate of the school community, including student concerns relating to diversity, equity, and belonging.

  • Collaborate and provide thought partnership to student services team on the best practices and programming to support diversity, equity, and belonging initiatives

  • Further develop Amicus, Harvard Law School’s student and alumni directory, community-building platform, and advising network, and opportunities for expansion of this tool among both student and alumni members. Set strategic vision for continued growth of mentorship programs for all students.

  • Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment.

  • Develop, manage and oversee departmental budget and oversee financial compliance for staff and projects. Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience

  • Supervisory experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who have:

  • J.D. strongly preferred

  • Extensive experience in student services and knowledge of best practices in mentoring programs in higher education

  • Demonstrated experience in planning and prioritization of projects, programs and activities, using sound judgment while meeting organizational requirements and maintaining accountability

  • High level of independent judgment, initiative, discretion, collegiality, integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, and attention to detail

  • Must have an understanding of how individuals’ lived experiences impact the needs of multiple constituencies

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and writing skills

Working Conditions

Will require working evening and weekend hours.
