Posting Summary
The primary role of this position is to assist in a research project aiming to understand the biogenesis and function of piwi interacting RNAs (piRNAs) in insects, particularly Anopheles mosquitoes. The new employee will design, perform, and interpret experiments to better understand the role piRNAs play in insect immunity to pathogens. The project will characterize piRNAs in natural populations of Anopheles mosquitoes and use population, evolutionary, and functional genomic methods to investigate the evolution of these piRNAs and the genomic integrations they target.  In so doing, our research group will produce high quality manuscripts on findings and generate pilot data to support future applications for external funding.

Minimum Education and Experience
Ph.D is required, Required professional experience includes a minimum of two years experience with molecular biology (DNA/RNA isolation and quantitation, next-generation sequence library preparation including working with microRNAs/small RNAs, construct design, cloning, PCR, and other general microbiological methods.) Expertise in bioinformatic analyses (including those for analysis of DNA and RNA datasets and proficiency with programming language such as R or Python) is also required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of mosquito genetics and vector-borne diseases preferred.

Overview
The position requires independent judgement on a daily basis. The individual will consult with the principle investigator on the long-term goals of the project. This position will directly impact the research program of the Bergey laboratory in the Department of Genetics. The position also involves attending and presenting data/results at local, regional, national, and international scientific conferences and publishing papers that will have a high impact in the biomedical research field.
