JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University (University Park, PA) is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to conduct fundamental research in the areas of piezoelectric ceramics covering their design, synthesis, and characterization.

This position requires extensive experience in design of piezoelectric materials through both compositional and microstructural modifications. The candidate should have prior experience with synthesis of the piezoelectric materials and measurement of their electrical, thermal and electromechanical properties (piezoelectric coefficients, ferroelectric properties, elastic constants). Penn State has extensive diffraction, microscopy and other microstructure analysis methods, which will allow understanding the role of domains, order/disorder, defects, mixed phases etc., on the combination of electromechanical, thermal and electrical properties. These prior experiences will be evaluated based upon the peer-reviewed high impact factor journal publications and conference proceedings. The candidate will conduct advanced studies on development of piezoelectric materials with superior electromechanical performance at high temperatures. It is expected that candidate has knowledge of powder manufacturing (e.g. high energy ball milling) and sintering techniques (e.g. ambient sintering, spark plasma sintering, hot pressing) and understanding of how to tailor the piezoelectric properties to meet application requirements. The candidate will be actively collaborating with multiple academic and industry team members and thus good communication skills are desired. The candidate is expected to participate in development of project reports and proposals and thus good technical writing skills are highly desired.

The piezoelectric ceramic processing research will be conducted at Innovation Park at the Penn State University Park Campus under the supervision of Prof. Shashank Priya.

Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in Engineering, Material Science, Physics or related fields, by the effective date of appointment.

This position is funded for one year from the date of hire with possibility of refunding.
