General Statement of Duties
Under general supervision, the purpose of the classification is to provide career and placement services to the public through The North Central Career Center and/or the Mount Wachusett Community College Adult Basic Education program. Employees in this classification perform vocational counseling, testing, assessment, and referral work. This Classification is responsible for designing/delivering career development workshops and orientations, providing career assessment/development/management services, providing case management services to all career center and/or Adult Education customers including but not limited to specialized populations such as adult, youth, and dislocated workers, and assisting with planning/implementation of The Career Center and Adult Education programs.
Responsibilities

  • The Career Development Counselor will conduct individual and group advising activities in accordance with their assignment as related to the Department of Adult Education and Training approved repopulation plan. Individual and/or group advising activities may be conducted remotely using video conferencing technology (Zoom, Google Meet, WebEX etc.) or in person depending on the program design;
  • The Career Development Counselor will collaborate with Adult Education instructors to deliver classroom instruction in areas critical to effective academic, career, and personal planning (i.e. goal-setting, problem-solving, decision-making, resume writing, interviewing techniques, etc.). Classroom instruction may take place in a physical classroom on-site or remotely via the program's learning management system (Google Classroom) using video-conferencing technology (Zoom, Google Meet, WebEx etc.);
  • The Career Development Counselor will record student academic and career plans within each student's electronic file;
  • The employee will meet with members of the MWCC Division of Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development and leadership within the Adult Education and Training program to understand the following MWCC programs in order to incorporate entry-level credentialing and non-credit to credit pathways within priority industries in North Central Massachusetts into students' academic and career plans:
  • Manufacturing Programs (IRT, QTT, ATT)
  • Healthcare programs (EMT, CNA, etc) and its relationship to the work of the MassHire North Central Career Center.
  • Non-Credit Occupational Training Within the Information Technology (IT) Sector.
  • Non-Credit Occupational Training Within the Transportation, Warehousing, and Logistics Sector.
  • Though not a priority industry - Early Childhood Education
  • The employee will meet with members of the MWCC Division of Academic Affairs and leadership within the Adult Education and Training program to understand academic programming that aligns with non-credit industry training along specific industry pathways in order to incorporate continued educational attainment along an industry pathway into students' academic and career plans;
  • The Career Development Counselor will utilize common career exploration tools that provide Labor Market Information - MassCIS, O*Net, The Occupational Outlook Handbook, Career Coach, etc;
  • The Career Development Counselor will document the Labor Market Information associated with student careers of interest within the electronic file of each student as part of their individualized Education and Career Plan;
  • The Career Development Counselor will participate in the active management of the MWCC Department of Adult Education and Training reportable waitlist within the LACES statewide adult education database.;
  • The Career Development Counselor will conduct on and off-site group information sessions regarding services and programs available;
  • The Career Development Counselor will meet individually with prospective students to provide them with information;
  • The Career Development Counselor will conduct individual intake appointments with potential students reviewing program information, steps to enrollment, and program policies. These appointments will be conducting either on-site or remotely using phone and video conferencing technology;
  • The Career Development Counselor will conduct group orientation sessions with entering students to review policy, information, technology, and student resources. These sessions will be conducted either on site or remotely using video conferencing technology (Zoom, Google Meet, WebEx etc.);
  • The Career Development Counselor will contribute to the development and management of the Adult Education and Training Orientation Google Classroom - posting assignments, reviewing student progress, and revising content as needed;
  • The Career Development Counselor will complete required training to hold active certifications in the following Assessments as directed by the Dean of Adult Education and Training Services and/or his/her designee: Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), Massachusetts Adult Proficiency Test (MAPT), Accuplacer, TABE Clas-E Reading and/or Writing, Best Plus 2.0 (or most current version), Best Literacy;
  • The Career Development Counselor will attend all necessary professional development to understand how to administer these summative assessments remotely as needed;
  • The Career Development Counselor will provide basic college enrollment counseling services - college admissions steps, basic program of study information, basic testing information, etc;
  • The Career Development Counselor will collaborate with the Transition to Community College coordinator to provide information to students about eligibility and enrollment in the Transition to Community College program;
  • The Career Development Counselor will collaborate with the Transition to Community College Coordinator to refer interested students to the North Central Massachusetts Educational Opportunity Center for assistance with financial aid applications and college enrollment counseling;
  • The Career Development Counselor will be trained in and utilize the Advisor Link advising tool;
  • The Career Development Counselor will record advising notes within the Advisor Link tool to ensure consistency of service for students as they progress through academic pathways at MWCC;
  • The Career Development Counselor will utilize the DegreeWorks degree planning tool when creating academic plans with Adult Education students;
  • The Career Development Counselor will attend training necessary to become proficient in the LACES data management system;
  • The Career Development Counselor will attend group and individual training sessions as necessary to ensure proficiency in the following tools: G-suite of Educational Applications (docs, sheets, slides, forms, etc), Google Meet, Google Classroom, Gmail;
  • The Career Development Counselor will maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 as deemed necessary by the Dean of Adult Education and Training Services;
  • The Career Development Counselor will complete any professional development necessary to be proficient in utilizing diverse video conferencing platforms (Zoom, Google Meet, WebEx etc.);
  • The Career Development Counselor will conduct remote outreach and recruitment as needed to support the enrollment goals of the diverse programs coordinated through the Department of Adult Education and Training;
  • The Career Development Counselor will maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 as deemed necessary by the Dean of Adult Education and Training Services;
  • The Career Development Counselor will attend information sessions/training/meetings etc., To build knowledge of student support services at MWCC and processes around access;
  • The Career Development Counselor will attend information sessions and training provided by TRIO programs at MWCC as directed by the Dean of Adult Education and Training Services;
  • The Career Development Counselor will attend individual and/or group training to ensure thorough understanding of disability services provided through the Adult Education program by the MWCC Office of Disability Services;
  • The Career Development Counselor will maintain a working knowledge of WIOA core partners in the North Central Massachusetts region;
  • The Career Development Counselor will attend information sessions and training events as assigned by the Dean of Adult Education and Training Services at regional partner agencies and community based organizations;
  • As assigned by the Dean of Adult Education and Training services or the President's Designee, the Career Development Counselor will attend meetings conducted by partner agencies to understand the structure and processes of those organizations;
  • As assigned by the Dean of Adult Education and Training services or the President's Designee, the Career Development Counselor will meet with partner agency staff outstationed at the MassHire North Central Career Center. These meetings may be conducted on-site or remotely using video conferencing technology (Zoom, Google Meet, WebEx etc.);

Job Requirements: **
Minimum Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Psychology, or closely related field;
  • Three (3) years experience and/or training that includes vocational counseling, vocational testing/assessment, vocational referrals, employment services, or career development/transition; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, or closely related field;
  • Five (5) years experience and/or training that includes vocational counseling, vocational testing/assessment, vocational referrals, employment services, or career development/transition; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in multiple languages preferred.
