Reporting to the Chief Strategy and Operations Officer as a seasoned fundraising professional, the Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving will be responsible for developing and implementing a national comprehensive fundraising plan for major gift and planned giving donors and prospects. In collaboration and partnership with our community development staff, the Director will be responsible for developing strategies, tactics and compelling communication that grows major giving and planned giving support. The Director, in collaboration with Community Development leadership, manages the Major Gift Officer function and oversees the development and implementation of annual written strategies and cultivation plans for prospects, as well as plan and execute Planned Giving educational programs annually leading to solicitation of major outright and planned gifts, including gift annuities and bequest intentions, and overall increasing the total dollars raised annually in support of Susan G. Komen. In addition, this position will also be responsible for assisting the CEO in managing her portfolio of prospects and donors


Develop and execute a major gift and planned giving fundraising strategy and communications program.

Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising program for major gift and planned giving donors and prospects that will include extensive one-on-one contact, tailored communications, prospect research, cultivation, stewardship, and donor engagement events.

Develop strategies and programs that deepens relationships with current planned and major donors, presents giving options that benefit donors and their families and grows Komen’s major gift and planned giving revenue.

Utilize all aspects of gift planning and estate vehicles including wills, trusts, gift annuities, insurance, IRAs and retirement assets and endowment giving.

Develop planned and major gift educational opportunities and materials for fellow staff, and prospects/donors

For use by our community staff, develop reusable communications, letters of inquiry and proposals to ensure a high quality, readable and consistent voice to donors and prospects that reflects our vision, core values and strategies.

Develops proposal templates for major and planned gifts including blended asks, endowment or specific program funding.

Oversee messaging of all renewal, special mailings, and acknowledgement correspondence to donors/prospects in the major gift and planned giving programs.

Coordinate and collaborate across regional community teams for execution of strategy and delivery on fundraising goals

Reimagine, reawaken and manage Komen’s giving societies.

Working in close collaboration with Marketing and other development teams, define a comprehensive and consistent approach to giving societies including membership and benefits

Develop a series of stewardship event and public programs to educate donors about major giving and planned giving topics.

Work with Marketing to keep our marketing collateral materials and website content that speak to this audience up to date and relevant.

Manage the CEO portfolio of 50-75 top prospects that are identified and qualified:

Identify, research, cultivate, and solicit for both major and planned gifts moving them through the donor cycle and being accountable for metrics of quality contacts, gift proposals and closures, create strategies to grow our program.

Together with CEO and CSOO, develop a plan of action to engage board members in major gift and panned giving solicitations.

Working with the CSOO, SVP Community Development and Operations, and other key Komen staff, create and maintain donor reports and a Moves Management process:

Within Salesforce, develop operational and process standards to track actions, view data and assist in analyzing data in order to inform and help prioritize individuals and strategies.

Within Salesforce, ensure staff are maintaining donor information and comprehensive donor profiles, documenting correspondence with donors, meeting notes, proposals and background information.

Track and report on trends/issues relating to major donor and planned giving programs in general and not-for-profit sectors most closely related to Seattle Humane donors and prospects.

Present a highly professional image and acts as a Komen ambassador to all stakeholders, through verbal, written, and face-to-face interactions.

Daily verbal and written communication with staff and volunteers through direct contact, meetings, telephone, mail and email.

Convey credibility and expertise in advising donors on confidential and sometimes complex philanthropic planning matters. Ease in initiating contact with persons not known, in person and by phone / email.

Represent the organization at events and speaking opportunities as needed (major donor functions, receptions, community events, etc.).

Commit to valuing diversity and contributes to an inclusive working environment that is sensitive to other opinions, culture, and perspectives.

Focus performance around the Komen strategic plan, annual plan, and help to develop a corporate culture of philanthropy, while living Komen’s mission and values.

Will perform other donor activities as required


Bachelor's Degree, required in Fundraising, Marketing, Communication or other relevant discipline.

Minimum of 10-15 years of major gift cultivation, solicitation, and estate planning or planned giving experience with demonstrable outcomes.

Detailed and in-depth knowledge of planned giving and its complexities including estate planning, tax laws, wills and trusts.

Preferred experience managing the software systems to perform prospect research, donor and data analysis and data mining, eg MarketSmart, iWave, TargetAnalytics, etc.

Position is highly sensitive and requires impeccable personal and professional integrity and discretion. Requires experience working Board Members and major donors.

Track record of building long-term, productive relationships with donors and philanthropic institutions.

Superb relationship management, interpersonal, and communication (written and oral) skills.

Strong understanding of technology and information systems, ability to utilize research tools and implement donor cultivation plans. Experience working with CRM databases required, Salesforce a plus.

Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently and is detail-oriented.

The ability to participate in evening and weekend events.

The ability to travel as needed (domestically).
