The Office of University Strategy was created by President Holloway to address challenges related to strategic clarity and organizational change through the design and stewardship of presidential initiatives, the facilitation and execution of university-wide strategic initiatives, and the development of a culture of collaborative goal setting, planning and problem-solving at the university.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Vice President, Strategic Initiatives for the The Office of University Strategy. Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Strategy, the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Initiatives provides collaborative leadership for strategic planning in service of achieving presidential goals and institutional strategic clarity. The Assistant Vice President coordinates a portfolio of complex, sensitive, highly visible projects, and will be responsible for helping to drive the university toward solutions for its most complex challenges by designing rigorous, consistent methodologies, work plans, and processes for the Office and for specific projects. The position is also responsible for facilitating, coordinating, and managing projects and initiatives associated with the university’s goals and strategic priorities. The portfolio of projects coordinated by this role will depend on the needs of the university but will typically cross traditional university silos. Accordingly, the Assistant Vice President must have an exceptional understanding of university finances, academic governance, and administrative operations. In addition to serving as a thought partner for members of the Office of University Strategy team, the Assistant Vice President must be able to act as an informed advisor to university leadership, interface with staff at a range of levels, and exhibit a nuanced understanding of the issues that are most important to relevant stakeholders or functional areas. The position works closely with the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and specifically, Institutional Research, to advance institutional effectiveness by helping design and develop dashboards, leading inquiry and analysis for major projects, and leveraging data to inform decisions. In support of the unit and departmental level strategic planning efforts that this new office will undertake, the Assistant Vice President designs surveys and other tools to bolster data-driven planning efforts.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Identifies and prioritizes strategic challenges and opportunities for the University and developing and executing plans for addressing these issues and priorities.
  • Identifies and tracks key metrics and assessment measures for strategic priorities
  • Convening discussions, gathering relevant data, and seeking input to inform strategic initiatives and direction
  • Partners and coordinates across the university on cross-cutting strategic planning efforts.
  • Oversees and leads strategic projects through assessment, diagnosis, design, and implementation, including gathering and analyzing data, bringing together relevant stakeholders, and delivering recommendations.
  • With the Senior Vice President, develops change strategy for the university, including identifying areas of opportunity and paths to achieving optimal solutions to the University’s most pressing challenges.
  • Develops processes and systems for internal, office use and for identifying strategic priorities, structuring projects, and ensuring exceptional quality to research, analysis, recommendations, and overall project outputs.
  • Develops written reports and presentations on findings and plans for executives, deans, directors, project working groups and the broader community.
  • Engages with diverse stakeholders, including executives, deans, directors, and others to conceptualize, design, implement, and sustain both incremental and transformational change initiatives.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Masters degree
  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience in a higher education institution or similarly complex environment .
