Overview

In this mission-critical role, the Principal Space Component Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the reliability and performance of components used in space systems and will have expertise in specifying components that can be qualified, screened, and radiation tested to achieve the pedigree required for space missions, ensuring high reliability while minimizing cost and lead time. This role will establish policies and procedures for material procurement, develop a database of space-qualified components, and investigate alternate component technologies, cost reduction methods, and quality/reliability improvements.


Responsibilities

  • Component Selection: Collaborate with IPTs to select components suitable for space applications, considering factors such as radiation resistance, temperature extremes, and long-term reliability.
  • Supplier Evaluation: Evaluate and select suppliers of components with a focus on those with a proven track record in space applications and adherence to strict quality standards.
  • Component Testing: Develop and oversee comprehensive testing procedures to validate the performance and reliability of components in a space environment, and to upscreen components to gain pedigree needed for space missions while minimizing cost and lead time.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of component specifications, testing results, and space pedigree documentation for compliance and traceability. Develop a database of space-qualified components including simulation models that can be used by RF engineers when developing new products.
  • Risk Assessment: Identify potential risks associated with component selection and develop mitigation strategies to ensure mission success.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including RF, mechanical, digital/test, project, and PMP engineers to ensure seamless integration of components into space systems.
  • Establish and maintain reliability guidelines and develop program-specific reliability documents as required; review preliminary parts lists for component issues, supported by stress and reliability analysis as required; conduct stress and reliability analysis.
  • Review proposals for component selection and test requirements/flows.
  • Manage Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) program to identify and track obsolete material and shortages; support Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) department with failure analysis and corrective actions.

Qualifications

MINIMUM:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronics/Chemical/Physics/Material Science Engineering and at least 5 years of experience in component engineering with a 3 year specialization in space-grade components. In lieu of degree, years of related experience can be considered.
  • In-depth knowledge of space mission requirements and component performance in extreme conditions.
  • Strong understanding of industry standards, such as MIL-PRF-19500, MIL-PRF-38534, MIL-PRF-38535, and ECSS-Q-ST-60.
  • Proficiency in component testing and evaluation techniques.
  • This position requires access to technology, materials, software or hardware that is controlled by US export laws. In order to be eligible for this position, you must be a US person under US export laws or, eligible for approval for a U.S. Government export license. A US Person includes a US citizen, lawful Permanent Resident, refugee or asylee.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronics/Chemical/Physics/Material Science Engineering and at least 8 years of experience in component engineering with a 5 year specialization in space-grade components. In lieu of degree, years of related experience can be considered.
  • Experienced in communicating with internal and external customers on a regular basis.
  • Experience participating in major program milestone reviews such as PDR and CDR.
  • Experience with EEE parts testing (e.g., screening, qualification, DPA, re-life, etc.), failure analysis, and non-conformance resolution.
  • Familiarity with technical requirements (specifications, program plans/requirements, etc.)
  • Experience with taking an electronic design through schematic capture, PCB layout, and bring-up.
  • Demonstrated projects or experience in one or more of the following areas: semiconductor physics, physics of failure, accelerated testing, design for reliability, EEE component design.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Salary Range: $ 124,354 - $ 205,573 annually (San Diego, CA)

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base bay. Applicable pay within the posted range may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, geographical location, job function of the position, education, and experience of the successful candidate. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well business results.
