Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Vice President for Academic Administration (VPAA) for the Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs (EVPAA) . The VP for Academic Administration provides high-level strategic, analytical, and organizational leadership to projects and initiatives in the Office of the EVPAA. The VPAA serves as the steward of the intercampus collaborative programs and initiatives that are facilitated, catalyzed, and enabled by the EVPAA. The VPAA also serves as the EVPAA designate during strategic conception and planning for the institution. At the Presidential senior leadership team level, this role will be an interface between the offices of EVPAA, SVPS (Strategy) and SVPR (Research). On an intramural level this role is the interface between EVPAA and other Vice Presidents and Associate Vice Presidents in the EVPAA unit (Academic Initiatives, Academic Affairs, Institutional Research, Global, Libraries, Research, etc.).

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Engages with the chancellors/provosts and deans and chairs from the four chancellor units.
  • Works with other personnel in the EVPAA organization (VP Academic Initiatives; VP Academic Affairs; AVPs for Academic Affairs) to convene planning and execution of new strategic programs or events; exercise management for and oversees outcomes of projects and initiatives.
  • Primary resource and point of contact for written communication and presentations on behalf of the Office of the EVPAA; and a strategic resource and touch-point for compiling the institutional academic dashboard data that informs academic strategy and decision making; and demonstrates a high level of initiative and judgment in completing ones work.
  • Represents the interests and priorities of the executive vice president through effective communication, coordination, and integration of academic initiatives, priorities, and objectives.
  • As an advisor to the EVPAA and as a liaison to academic and administrative units across the university on behalf of the EVPAA, this role serves as a visible leader across the four campuses at Rutgers with the ability to balance and influence multiple competing priorities and individuals.
  • Conducts interdisciplinary initiatives in concert with the provosts, deans, and faculty domain experts for cross-cutting projects across multiple chancellor units, as well as the other VP units in EVPAA organization, other SLT units (SVP Strategy, Research, for example) and various academic units. Some of the initiatives will focus on strategic new academic and research initiatives as well as on new experiential and educational projects.
  • Steers program assessment and reviews along with the assessment teams in EVPAA organization with the goal of launching strategic evaluation of targeted schools and programs, especially those that straddle multiple chancellor units.
  • Provides data-driven recommendations and consultation to the EVPAA for strategic decision making.
  • Manages small and large scale projects on behalf of the EVPAA frequently involving senior university officials.
  • Provide on-going analysis and delivery of projects to maximize resources and ensure objectives are met in collaboration with the EVPAA team.
  • Researches complex issues and recommends possible direction and/or resolution.
  • Assists with the planning and oversight of meetings and events.
  • Develops high-level, confidential documents and reports on behalf of the EVPAA.
  • Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with deans, vice presidents, vice provosts, reporting units, Academic Labor, Faculty Council, and governance organizations to ensure strategic planning and academic initiatives are in alignment with the university’s instructional and research mission. Work closely with chiefs of staff and deputies in executive offices to advance the priorities of the institution in a coordinated manner.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • PhD. degree in an appropriate academic discipline or higher education administration, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of academia and current practices in higher education.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Sustained experience working with a diverse array of university constituents in a collegial and effective manner.
  • Demonstration of the following competencies: organizational savvy and political acumen, operational functions, problem solving, effective communication, decision making and critical thinking, managing multiple priorities, planning and organizing, organizational change management, producing results, relationship management, and collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in relevant field with more than 10 years of experience successfully functioning in comparable leadership roles at a research-intensive University.
  • Experience working in a provost’s office, including on issues related to undergraduate education, graduate education, the research enterprise, and crisis management. In addition to academic affairs experience, broader knowledge of higher education institutions to include government affairs, student affairs, academic compliance, and administrative operations, among others.
