Princeton University is seeking a postdoctoral research associate or more senior researcher to work with the High Energy Experiment group in the Physics Department in collaboration with the Princeton Institute for Computational Science and Engineering (PICSciE) on computational research in experimental High Energy Physics. Many areas of High Energy Physics focus on understanding the elementary particles that are the fundamental constituents of the universe. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN collides an ever-increasing number of protons in the CMS and ATLAS experiments in order to search for rare and new interactions. While a very large number of collisions and a large amount of data is useful for measuring and searching for new physics, it poses a problem as a vast majority of this data cannot be stored for offline use and must either be classified as "interesting" by the trigger system, or thrown away.
The Princeton group is involved in the development of advanced high speed algorithms that run on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) for the Level-1 trigger and Data Acquisition (DAQ) systems at CMS as well as R&D for innovative software upgrades for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) through the Institute for Research and Innovation in Software for High Energy Physics (IRIS-HEP, http://iris-hep.org/about/overview). The successful candidate will play a leading role in a project which aims to utilize machine learning to search for rare events in a physics-model agnostic way at the LHC, in collaboration with other experimentalists, phenomenologists and computer scientists. A highly qualified candidate will have previous experience deploying ML algorithms for use on large datasets and either experience or a willingness to learn how to develop algorithms for use in highly-constrained computing environments. A PhD in High Energy Particle Physics Experiment or advanced degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a similar field is preferred.
