About the Department

The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) Communications Team is responsible for marketing and communications initiatives involving the CEFS partnership (NC State, N.C. A&T, and NCDA&CS) overall as well as for supporting promotion of CEFS’ six field research units and 10+ food systems initiatives. Support includes website and social media management, newsletters, graphic design, photography, videography, writing and editing support, etc.

Essential Job Duties

The CEFS Communications Specialist will support the CEFS Communications Team on website and social media management, event advertising and coverage, videography, photography, graphic design projects, and other communications deliverables.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Understand and support development of strategic messaging via website, social media, videos, blog posts, and other avenues.
  • Work with staff and faculty to develop engaging and timely content to convey CEFS’ work and impact and to support promotion of CEFS events.
  • Conduct interviews and develop blog posts and newsletter highlights covering a broad spectrum of CEFS’ work.
  • Support development of social media content and graphics as well as printed marketing and promotional materials including brochures, videos, posters, reports, banners, etc.
  • Post events, news items, press releases, employment opportunities, and other timely announcements as needed.
  • Support CEFS’ social media strategy and management for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and additional platforms as needed.
  • Develop graphic design deliverables, videos, and take photographs to promote CEFS events, initiatives, and research.
  • Adhere to timelines for assigned projects/deliverables, such as website updates, videos, publications, graphic design and marketing materials, content development for CEFS initiatives, etc.
  • Help to plan, write, edit, and produce communications content.
  • Serve as a communications resource for CEFS staff and affiliates with guidance from the CEFS Communications Manager as needed.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • Ability to support a communications strategy that effectively conveys the breadth, depth, and impact of CEFS’ work while also highlighting its collaborative nature and the roles of CEFS’ many partners.
  • Thorough knowledge of communications strategy that effectively conveys the breadth, depth, and impact of CEFS’ work while also highlighting its collaborative nature and the roles of CEFS’ many partners.
  • Must have strong writing, editing, proofreading, interviewing, videography, graphic design, and photography skills.
  • Must be able to juggle multiple priorities and projects and meet deadlines.
  • Must be capable of doing all the described activities independently while also working closely with the rest of the CEFS Communications Team and a varied group of CEFS staff, faculty, students, and other stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills are critical.
  • Must demonstrate previous success in updating websites in a WordPress CMS, using email marketing tools like Constant Contact, MS Office and Google Drive Suite, Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite for graphic design and videography, and social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, LinkedIn).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of sustainable agriculture and the local food system environment in North Carolina.
