Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology within Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The Patel laboratory (http://www.smitapatelab.org/) is recruiting Postdoctoral Fellows to work on one of three ongoing research projects. The candidates should have a PhD in life sciences and a strong background in biochemical and molecular biology methods to study proteins and nucleic acids.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • One project involves studying the regulation of the human mitochondrial DNA transcription process, which is responsible
for the production of essential gene products for ATP synthesis.
  • The second project involves studying the initiation of the human mitochondrial DNA replication process responsible for the
proper maintenance of the mitochondrial DNA copy numbers in the cells. Mutations in the genes responsible for the transcription and replication of the mitochondrial DNA are associated with numerous mitochondrial related neuromuscular diseases with poor understanding. The project involves reconstituting protein complexes and using biochemical and biophysical methods to study protein-DNA interactions, quantitative time resolved methods to elucidate reaction pathways and enzyme mechanisms, and cryoEM methods to elucidate structures of protein-DNA complexes.
  • The third project involves studying the RIG-I family viral sensors of the innate immune system to understand its activation mechanism for developing broad spectrum antiviral agents. The project involves developing new assays to probe the autoinhibition and activation mechanisms of the viral sensors, structural analysis (X-ray and CryoEM), quantitative protein-RNA interactions, kinetic analysis of the ATPase and helicase activities, and cell based assays to probe the signaling pathway.
  • Engage in scientific communication, training of junior personnel, grant writing and manuscript preparation.
  • Participate in the evaluation of existing procedures, suggesting revisions where necessary and proposing new procedures
where required. Assists in the implementation of the programs and projects in special areas of interest to the laboratory.
