Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for the Department of Pharmacology, Physiology and Neuroscience within the New Jersey Medical School.

A postdoctoral opportunity for a highly motivated candidate is immediately available in the Neuroscience Laboratory of Dr. Miriam Bocarsly. The Bocarsly lab uses systems level approach to identify the neural substrates, circuits and behavioral motivations driving food intake, and their contributions to the development of disease states such as compulsive overeating, obesity and anorexia. To do this, the laboratory uses a combination of novel transgenic mouse lines, optogenetics, chemogenetics, in vivo fiber photometry, molecular techniques, ex vivo brain slice fast-scan cyclic voltammetry and fiber photometry, and behavior using mouse models.

Under direction of Principal Investigator (PI), the Postdoctoral Fellow performs research activities requiring application of standard and novel techniques and procedures to study the neural circuitry underlying appetitive behaviors.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Responsible for designing, conducting and troubleshooting experiments.
  • Responsible for applying for individual fellowships, and providing data for laboratory grant applications.
  • Responsible for collecting, interpreting and publishing results.
  • Assists in conducting a continuous program of research and development regarding the analytical and instrumentation functions of the laboratory, constantly evaluating existing procedures, revising where necessary, proposing new procedures where required and evaluating suggestions and changes as proposed, in order to keep the methodology and procedures current.
  • Assists with the instructing and training of fellows, students, research assistants and laboratory technicians in laboratory techniques.
  • As directed, assists in the implementation of programs and projects in special areas of interest to the division or department, conferring with the individuals involved.
  • Assists with the preparations of proposals, formal applications and justification for grant application.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Ph.D. in a field relevant to Neuroscience, with experience with data analysis, laboratory techniques and manuscript publishing.
  • Experience with rodent behavior, molecular techniques, and/or rodent surgeries is a plus.

  • First author research publications are required.
