Position Summary

A post-doctoral position in molecular microbial ecology and environmental engineering is available immediately in the Williams Laboratory in the School of Engineering and Technology at Central Michigan University. The successful candidate will work on research projects related to developing molecular tools and assays for detection of microbial pathogens and functional genes in water and soil, sampling and genomic analysis for wastewater surveillance of microbial and viral targets, and assessment of clinically relevant functional genes (including antimicrobial resistance genes) and their dissemination in the environment. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the preparation of manuscripts for publication of research efforts and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.

Required Qualifications

A Ph.D. in environmental engineering, environmental sciences, microbiology, molecular biology, or a related field (within the last six years).

Expertise with one or more environmental genomics approaches (qPCR, metagenomics, bioinformatics, etc.) to characterize microbial functional genes in environmental samples.

Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Experience with environmental biotechnology and/or antimicrobial resistance research is strongly desired.

Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

About the Department

The School of Engineering and Technology currently offers five ABET accredited engineering programs in computer engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering, industrial engineering technology, and mechanical engineering technology, and has recently started the environmental engineering program. The School of Engineering and Technology presently has 26 full-time faculty members and also offers an undergraduate major in product design engineering technology. The School also has an MS in Engineering program. Courses are taught in an attractive 70,000 square foot engineering & technology building which houses more than twenty laboratories and support spaces.
