JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to participate in a project focused on whole-genome sequencing of Bacilli considered near neighbors of biothreats, to facilitate rapid detection of novel/emerging infectious diseases. The Postdoctoral Scholar will work in University Park, PA, in the laboratory of Dr. Jasna Kovac (https://foodscience.psu.edu/directory/jzk303 ). The candidate will have a PhD in Microbiology, Biochemistry/Molecular Biology, Infectious Diseases, Bioinformatics, Food Science, or a related field and will be able to provide evidence that all requirements have been met for completion of the PhD before the effective date of hire. The candidate will have experience with microbiology, molecular microbiology, NGS library preparation and sequencing (Nanopore, Illumina), and/or NGS data analyses. The candidate must possess excellent communication and organizational skills and demonstrate evidence of effective writing through peer-reviewed publications.

The candidate will be expected to carry out DNA extraction, library preparation, Nanopore sequencing, and Nanopore and Illumina sequencing data analyses. The candidate will be expected to prepare project reports, manuscripts, and research presentations in collaboration with team members. The candidate will also be expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students working as part of the larger research group. Finally, it is expected that the candidate will work with their mentor to prepare and submit applications for external funding through appropriate fellowship and grant mechanisms. This is a fixed-term position funded for one year from date of hire with the good possibility of re-funding.
