Department Name/Job Location

This position is in the Department of Biology.  This position is for the Danforth Campus in the School of Arts & Sciences.

Essential Functions

The Hengen Lab at Washington University in St. Louis represents the next generation of neuroscience labs. Combining "big data", machine learning, engineering, advanced genetic tools, and the ability to track the activity of large numbers of individual neurons in freely behaving animals for many weeks, the Hengen Lab seeks to understand how plasticity mechanisms in individual neurons can give rise to stable emergent properties over time, such as sensation, perception, and memory. In a highly collaborative environment that demands dynamic engagement with researchers from diverse backgrounds, members of the Lab are motivated, curious, and must "think big".

The Lab is seeking to add a top-notch postdoctoral researcher to the team. Specifically, the incoming postdoc will immediately join a project focused on a systems-level exploration of neurodegeneration.

Competitive candidates for this position may come from a variety of fields such as neurophysiology, animal behavior, applied math, and computer science. Candidates are expected to be emerging leaders who are highly motivated and excited to combine their current skill-sets and ideas with new and diverse approaches. Candidates will be expected to push intellectual and technical boundaries in the lab and develop new directions while integrating into the current team.

The successful candidate will readily engage with cutting edge methods in neurophysiology, machine learning, modelling, and data science.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree, which need not be restricted to neuroscience.
  • Individuals with appropriate experience/degrees in engineering, computer science, physics, math and related fields will be seriously considered.

Salary Range

Base pay commensurate with experience.

Pre-Employment Screening

All external candidates receiving an offer for employment will be required to submit to pre-employment screening for this position. Current employees applying for a new position within the university may be subject to this requirement. The screenings will include a criminal background check and, as applicable for the position, other background checks, drug screen, employment and education or licensure/certification verification, physical examination, certain vaccinations and/or governmental registry checks. All offers are contingent upon successful completion of required screening.
