During the 2024 fiscal year, researchers at the University of Notre Dame submitted 1,310 proposals for external research funding for a total amount of $1.016 billion — the first time the University has surpassed the billion-dollar mark for proposals. In addition, the University received 829 separate awards — the largest number on record. With $224 million in total funding, these awards propelled the University past the $200 million mark for the fourth straight year. To support this immense growth, Notre Dame Research is recruiting talented research administration professionals to enhance the team that will steward our research enterprise into its next phase.

Notre Dame Research Administration and Compliance (NDRAC) is seeking an Associate Director of Research Training to lead the University’s research administration and compliance training unit. Reporting to the Director of Research Policy and Training, this role is essential to advancing Notre Dame’s research by providing comprehensive, effective education to researchers and staff involved in sponsored programs and compliance.

Position Overview:
The Associate Director designs and establishes, develops, and leads training programs to equip Notre Dame researchers and staff with the skills and knowledge needed for regulatory compliance and effective research administration. This role involves strategic planning, curriculum design, program development, and team oversight. The Associate Director will:
  • Collaborate with Stakeholders: Work closely with University researchers, administrators, and various departments to align training with University goals, ensure comprehensive coverage of compliance needs, and foster a learning culture.
  • Lead Curriculum Development: Oversee the creation, implementation, and continuous improvement of training programs and resources, working with subject matter experts (SMEs) and instructional designers.
  • Manage Training Events: Plan and execute large-scale training events and ongoing learning experiences, tailoring content to meet federal, sponsor, and University standards.
  • Technology and Assessment: Manage learning management systems, evaluate the effectiveness of training programs, and adapt resources to ensure alignment with industry standards and evolving regulatory requirements.

Core Responsibilities
  • Develop and Oversee Programs: Manage and evaluate research administration and compliance training programs, including orientation, role-specific training, and regulatory requirements for new and ongoing employees.
  • Event Coordination: Lead the design and organization of key events, such as the annual symposium for research faculty and administrators. This includes managing all event logistics, from planning and promotion to follow-up and assessment.
  • Strategic Goal Alignment: Ensure training programs align with University objectives, translating strategic goals into learning outcomes and identifying skills gaps that the training curriculum can address.
  • Collaborate Across Departments: Engage stakeholders at all levels to create an inclusive, service-oriented training environment, updating content based on input from both internal and external resources.
  • Monitor and Evaluate: Continuously assess and improve training programs, using data to ensure they meet University standards and compliance requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree, required. Master’s degree, preferred.
  • Preference given to fields of study that include, but are not limited to: Adult Learning and Development, Education, Instructional Design, Organizational Development, Human Resource Management, or Business Administration.

Qualifications:
Well-qualified applicants will have the following preferred experience. Experience in and exposure to research in a higher education environment is beneficial. Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, provided the minimum degree requirement is met.
  • University Research:
    • Experience leading a training unit in a University research setting.
    • Three (3) or more years of experience and knowledge in research administration and compliance at a large diversified externally sponsored research enterprise.
    • Ability to understand the complexity of sponsored research administration in a University research environment, and the ability to communicate with a variety of constituents: faculty, staff, and external partners. Includes the ability to lead committees with a variety of stakeholders.
    • Ability to synthesize and simplify complicated policies and regulations for consumption by a variety of end-users.
    • Experience with electronic research administration (ERA) systems.
  • Education and Training:
    • Seven (7) or more years of work experience in strategically designing, developing, and delivering technical training programs, of which four (4) or more years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position.
    • Demonstrated experience in planning and organizing curricula, developing and providing instruction, guidance, and creation of training materials required.
    • Experience organizing and coordinating large scale events.
      • Knowledge of mentoring relationships and programming.
    • Applied, working knowledge of adult learning and development strategies (ADDIE, e.g.), as well as experience with learning management systems (LMS).
    • Knowledge of various training delivery modes, proficiency in public speaking, and excellent interpersonal and human relations skills with a diverse audience.
    • Evidence of experience with presentation tools such as MS Power Point, Prezi, or similar tools.
    • Knowledge of evaluation methodology to measure the effectiveness of training solutions and materials.
  • Management of training professionals:
    • Manages a team of internal and external resources in the design, development, delivery and evaluation of an education and training curriculum and its components of programs, courses and events.
    • Works with an established network of education and training vendors and consultants with proven success in academic research environments.
