Student Success Coordinator (Freshman) is responsible for the overall implementation and coordination of the First Year Experience and other programming activities and initiatives to support and enhance student engagement and learning. This position will assist first-year students in establishing their professional and academic goals by identifying student needs and offering necessary student success services that lead to persistence and on-time graduation. The Coordinator is also responsible for overseeing activities to meet the College's retention goals for year one. This is a grant-funded position through September 2026 under Calumet College’s Strengthening Hispanic-Serving Institutions grant.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
First Year Requirements
Program Leadership and Development:
- Implementation of the Freshman Year Experience (FYE) program.
- Develop innovative initiatives to enhance the first-year student experience, including orientation, first-year seminars, peer mentoring, and co-curricular activities.
- Collaborate with academic departments, student services, and other campus entities to integrate FYE programs into the broader college experience.
Staff Supervision and Development:
- Supervise and mentor FYE Peer Ambassadors.
- Provide professional development opportunities for staff to ensure high-quality program delivery and continuous improvement.
Student Engagement and Success:
- Meet one on one with freshman to provide integrated social, emotional and academic support.
- Foster a supportive environment that promotes student engagement, academic achievement, and personal growth.
- Develop and implement strategies to support the transition of first-year students, with a focus on retention, persistence, and success.
- Oversee the coordination of first-year seminars, academic workshops, and social integration activities.
Assessment and Evaluation:
- Measure and monitor the retention Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and identify necessary changes to address retention.
- Work with the retention committee, faculty and staff to respond to academic alerts and support students.
- Respond to faculty submitted academic alerts and work with students to ensure they receive the necessary assistance and support.
- Analyze data related to student retention, academic performance, and satisfaction to inform program improvements.
- Prepare regular reports on program outcomes and present findings to college leadership.
Collaboration and Partnerships:
- Work closely with faculty, staff, and administrators to ensure FYE programs are aligned with the college’s mission and grant goals.
- Develop partnerships with campus and community organizations to enhance the FYE program offerings.
- Collaborate with campus partners such as GENL 100 faculty who support the first-year experience and coordinate meaningful and welcoming activities that foster student engagement, academic success and a sense of belonging.
- Represent the FYE programs on various college committees and task forces.
Grant Requirements
- Work collaboratively with the VP for Student Engagement and Retention, Director of Career Services and Student Success, and the HSI team
- Prepare regular reports to meet grant requirements
- Utilize budget resources effectively to meet grant goals
- Demonstrate commitment to meeting student needs
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher
- At least one year of experience working with student populations, preferably in a high school or community college setting
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work in a team, as well as being self-motivated
- Skilled in using Microsoft applications, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Bilingual a plus
