Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry at Michigan State University invites applications for one or, possibly, two positions of Research Associate (post-doctoral researcher) in the group of Professor Piotr Piecuch. Each position is a one-year appointment with a possibility of extension beyond one year based upon favorable performance review, availability of funding, and mutual agreement. Responsibilities will include working with Professor Piecuch and members of his group on (1) development and programming of ab initio electronic structure approaches exploiting the exponential wave function ansätze of single- and multi-reference coupled-cluster theories, with a focus on methods that can capture higher-order correlation effects; (2) development and computer implementation of hybrid ab initio electronic structure approaches combining coupled-cluster and non-coupled-cluster deterministic, semi-stochastic, and/or stochastic concepts; (3) development  and programming of coupled-cluster methods geared toward an accurate description of strongly correlated systems; (4) applications of high-level ab initio coupled-cluster and other methods to potential energy surfaces, molecular spectroscopy, chemical reactivity, and photochemistry; (5) writing scientific papers and presenting results at conferences.

Required Degree

Doctorate -theoretical, computational, or quantum chemistry or physics

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have a PhD in theoretical, computational, or quantum chemistry or physics with graduate or postdoctoral experience in the development and computer implementation of ab initio electronic structure and many-body methods, preferably methods based on the coupled-cluster theory, excellent communication skills, and a strong track record of scientific productivity.

Desired Qualifications

The candidate for a position should have: (1) high-level knowledge and thorough understanding of ab initio electronic structure and many-body methods, especially methods based on the single- and multi-reference coupled-cluster formalisms; (2) significant programming experiences in implementing highly correlated electronic structure and many-body methods; (3) familiarity with algebraic and diagrammatic techniques of many-body theory; (4) outstanding manuscript writing skills; (5) ability to work with others, especially graduate students or postdocs and faculty in a collaborative environment; (6) good time management skills; and (7) ability to assist in writing reports.
