Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

JIFSAN-CFS3, a joint program of the University of Maryland and the U.S. FDA, is seeking a Post-Doctoral Associate to plan and conduct food safety research focusing on the identification and characterization of foodborne bacteria including unknown organisms, Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and Salmonella using whole genome sequencing, metagenomics, and other advanced technologies, collaborate with graduate and undergraduate students in the team, publish research findings, and help prepare for research proposals to funding agencies.

• Responsible for working with a team to develop and conduct microbial food safety research, including characterization, whole genome sequencing and metagenomics of foodborne pathogens.
• Record and publish research findings.
• Prepare and submit research reports and proposals.
• Monitor progress of activities and ensure that timelines and deliverables are achieved.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ph.D. degree in microbiology, public health, food science or related field.


• Strong organizational, planning and writing skills; strong research skills in bioinformatics, microbiology and molecular biology; excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Research experience on microbial genomics, metagenomics, and molecular biology of bacteria.
