This position will coordinate the off-campus “Advanced Learning” instructional programs at the Pickaway Correctional Institution (PCI) in Orient, Ohio. Students served will include incarcerated persons enrolled in the “Advanced Learning” certificate programs that possess diverse educational skills and abilities, but will meet all of the entrance requirements of Sinclair Community College. This is a grant funded position that provides all instructional and supervision for the “Advanced Learning” programs at the Pickaway Correctional Institution (PCI) located in Orient, Ohio.

This is a grant funded position contingent upon the funding associated with this grant

This position is for current Sinclair employees only

Principal Accountabilities
  • Serve as the liaison between Sinclair Community College (SCC) and correctional facility warden(s), educational staff, and administration at PCI
  • Assess instructional needs and opportunities at regional facilities for SCC courses
  • Collaborate to develop and implement certificate programs with SCC department chairpersons and deans to meet the incarcerated persons post-secondary educational needs in correctional settings
  • Orient staff and instructional faculty to teaching in a correctional setting and working with the diverse needs of incarcerated adult learners and correctional staff; oversee security clearance process; assist in resolving instructor issues when needed, etc.
  • Supervise the Assistant Coordinator in handling day-to-day operational activities; provide guidance to the Assistant Coordinator as needed with respect to necessary support services for the students, including placement testing, academic advising, registration, textbooks and tutoring; including weekly and monthly attendance
  • Ensure that all policies and regulations of the correctional facilities, the State’s Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections and the College are followed and enforced
  • Maintain records that conform to the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections and Sinclair Community College.
  • Provide accurate and on-time reports to correctional facilities, Sinclair Community College and the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections
  • Develop an annual report to the Ohio Penal Education Annually Consortium (OPEC) in September of each year concerning enrollment, completes, academic honors, attrition, releases, transfers, students choices, academic, disciplinary, and “other” to include medical, AWL, attendance, refusal to do community service, and protective custody
  • Develop and maintain the budget in concert with the Criminal Justice Chair for all “Advance Learning” programs for the Allen Correctional Institution
  • Attend meetings of the Ohio Penal Education Consortium (OPEC), per DRC policy

Requirements
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in law enforcement, correctional counseling, correctional education, or related field required; master’s degree in a related field preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year professional experience in a correctional, law enforcement, or higher education setting required
  • Previous work experience in a supervisory role and/or an educational setting preferred
  • Ability to exercise leadership for education program development in the unique and complex environment of a correctional facility required
  • Current working knowledge of, and successful professional experience working within the criminal justice system, required
  • Professional communication skills to include but not limited to oral and written required
  • Ability to successfully work with diverse constituents, including college faculty and administrators as well as inmates and staff in correctional facilities required
  • Ability to supervise staff and manage resource and operations effectively and efficiently required
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously while providing great attention to detail while meeting all prescribed deadlines required
  • Current working knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to learn necessary college related databases required
