What You Will Do

The Computational Earth Science Group (EES-16) in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research associate who will work primarily on projects in pipeline infrastructure design, CO2 capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). The work will be a combination of developing new computational capabilities as well as applying newly developed and existing computational tools. The successful candidates will join the Subsurface Flow and Transport team of EES-16 and will collaborate with scientists in the group as well as with other LANL groups and with external industrial and academic partners. The postdoctoral research will focus on development of computational techniques with applications to challenging real-world problems primarily related to CCUS but potentially to energy production, climate change and environmental contamination management. You will be expected to publish results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present your work at conferences. The term of the appointment is two (2) years, with the option to extend to a third year depending on performance and funding availability.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in a STEM field

  • Record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals

  • Communication skills as evidenced by publications and oral presentations at conferences

  • Detailed cover letter addressing how you meet each of the above requirements and any of the desired skills.

Education/Experience: Candidates must have received a Ph.D. within the last five years in a STEM field, or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with pipeline infrastructure design, CCUS, oil and gas production

  • Experience in computational methods such as optimization and machine learning

  • Familiarity with multi-phase flow in porous media and fluid flow in pipelines

  • Proficiency in programing languages such as Python and Julia
Note to Applicants:

The application package consists of a CV and a cover letter. Your cover letter should explicitly address how you meet each of the minimum requirements and any of the desired skills, if applicable. In addition to applying online, applicants may email their CV and cover letter to Dr. Bailian Chen (bailianchen@lanl.gov) and Dr. Rajesh Pawar (rajesh@lanl.gov). No applicant is expected to have all of the desired skills. Anyone who meets the minimum requirements is encouraged to apply.

LANL postdoctoral researchers start with a minimum annual salary of $79,500. Candidates may be considered for a Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious J. Robert Oppenheimer, Richard P. Feynman, or Frederick Reines Fellowships.
