Essential Functions (Job Duties)
The Laboratories of the Perinatology Research Branch have locations at Hutzel Women's Hospital and the C.S. Mott Center for Human Growth and Development. The PRB serves Southeastern Michigan as the primary obstetrical care center for the Detroit Medical Center (DMC), an affiliate of Wayne State University (WSU).
One of our missions is to increase and enhance research in reproductive sciences, identify the most critical areas of women's health research and facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations to fill in the knowledge gap. We aim to enhance educational opportunities in reproductive sciences and establish a thriving community of reproductive science researchers at Wayne State University. Our research is enhanced by a highly collaborative environment within the School of Medicine.
Essential functions of a Post Doc Fellow or Research Associate may include:
Perform scientific techniques or research protocols. Assist the Principal Investigator in designing and performing protocols. Design and perform experiments. Collect and log research data. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist other lab members with experiments as required. May mentor research assistants and students.
With the assistance of the mentor, find and write research grants with the goal of obtaining additional research grant funding. Responsibilities may also include coordinating correspondence with applicants and grantees, acknowledging receipts of proposals, and maintaining a system to track proposals.
Evaluate and perform preliminary analysis of the data using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated.
Prepare and present presentations regarding research project results for professional, scientific and academic conferences. Summarize and organize data results for submittal to academic and scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. Write scientific manuscripts and other documents for publication. Fact-check, proofread, and edit research documents to ensure accuracy.
Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required. Order and organize required research supplies and records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.
Perform laboratory based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research. Design and perform experiments, recruit participants for studies by developing surveys and interviewing candidates. Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist staff with experiments /research protocols as required. Communicate with principal investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows on the status of research.
Collect and log laboratory results, clinical outcomes and/or survey data. Evaluate and perform data analysis using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated. Proofread and edit research data and documents to ensure accuracy.
Prepare and present presentations regarding research results for professional, scientific and academic conferences. Summarize and organize data results for submittal to academic and scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. Write scientific manuscripts and other documents for publication. Fact-check, proofread, and edit research documents to ensure accuracy.
Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required. Order and organize required research supplies and records. Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
 
Unique Duties
Successful candidates will be able to perform the following:
Participate in studies investigating pathways that lead to obstetrical disorders, whose goals aim to improve the understanding of the mechanisms of disease and to develop methods for the early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of pregnancy complications, emphasizing spontaneous preterm labor and birth.
Design and conduct research experiments using biological samples. Develop, adopt, and implement new laboratory methods. Perform applicable tasks in a biosafety cabinet and utilize applicable PPE (e.g. gloves, surgical gowns, lab coats, face shield or goggles, etc.).
Evaluate and perform preliminary analysis of the data using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols. Perform data acquisition and data analysis to prepare reports, documents, and scholarly publications of outcomes.
Summarize and organize data results for submittal to academic and scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. Write scientific manuscripts and other documents for publication. Fact-check, proofread, and edit research documents to ensure accuracy.
Play an active role in seeking career and research advice. Establish a short-term and long-term career development plan with the Principal Investigator.
Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines. Assist other lab members with experiments as required. Supervise and mentor research assistants, undergraduate students, and graduate students.
Prepare and present presentations regarding research project results for professional, scientific and academic conferences. Present abstracts (oral/poster) at regional, national, and/or international scientific meetings.
Develop presentations for laboratory and Journal Club meetings.
Maintain records of experiments and enter into databases. Data from experiments will be stored long-term in laboratory notebooks, databases, and on the server system. Therefore, providing clear and detailed data and notes are required at all times.
Maintain laboratory operations, including the equipment. Maintain the laboratory work areas such as performing maintenance on equipment as required, washing and autoclaving glassware, and disposing of biohazardous waste. Maintain cleanliness and organization of workstation.
Maintain inventory, order supplies and anticipate laboratory needs.
Keep informed of developments in the field to maintain and enhance professional expertise.
Draft slides and scripts for social media presentations and preparing other multimedia/promotional items. Prepare and present video(s) describing abstracts and/or published papers.
Prepare and update the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in the laboratory.
Support the preparation of quarterly/yearly productivity reports, project proposals, and other research-related documents.
Additional duties as assigned.
Perform high-quality research in the field of maternal-fetal Immunobiology: the innate host mechanisms involved in intra-amniotic inflammation.
Perform high resolution ultrasound in pregnant mice
Data analysis basic SPSS and advanced (R package)
Drafting of manuscripts
Journal Club Presentations focused on Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Immunobiology
Collaborate with other postdoctoral fellows and senior members of the Unit
Train undergraduate and graduate students (medical students).
Assist the Principal Investigator with Scientific and Administrative Tasks.
 
Qualifications
Research Associate Qualifications Include:
Bachelor's degree required in a related field of study, preferred.
Requires advanced knowledge, predominantly intellectual in character, in a field of science or learning acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.
Minimum of two years job related experience.
Ability to work independently, analyze, summarize and interpret research findings in reports and communicate results. Knowledge of scientific integrity principles. Excellent time management and organization skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment. Microsoft office software skills.
Post Doc Fellow Qualifications Include:
Doctorate Degree required.
Requires advanced knowledge in a field of science or learning, predominantly intellectual in character. This knowledge is acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction.
3-4 years job related experience required.
Job related experience can include doctorate training. Experience performing basic research techniques, preferred. Must have distinguished themselves in research. Prior recipient of funding for research based on individual achievements.
Ability to work independently, secure grants and funding for research. Ability to collect, analyze, summarize and interpret research findings in reports and communicate results to the field. Knowledge of and experience with current scientific integrity principles. Excellent time management and organization skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment. Microsoft office software skills.
