A role in Petco Merchandising Operations means leading a game changing blueprint to align people, process, and systems so that we can evolve and execute Merchandising's multi-year winning strategy. Within Merchandising Operations, the Strategic Vendor Management team develops and recommends strategies to improve business performance by working closely with Merchandising leadership in analyzing market trends and dynamics, vendor/brand economics and productivities, guest loyalty, and related assortment optimization opportunities. The team leverages strategic vendor negotiation tactics to bolster the impact of strategic recommendations and incrementally improve business outcomes.
The Strategic Vendor Management Senior Manager/Manager role supports Merchants to manage relationships with strategic vendors, ensuring compliance with negotiated terms, and supporting negotiation preparation (including scorecards, playbooks). You'll use the right combination of data, expertise, and leadership to coordinate and manage efforts to deliver the greatest value for the company and our guests and their pets. You'll develop team members with your coaching, mentoring, and training expertise. It's your skills that help establish arobust and strategic vendor management framework to drive more value and less risk from critical vendor relationships.
Responsibilities
- Develop analytical materials to be shared internally during category reviews and assortment discussions with the Merchandising team. Materials include category scorecards, supplier playbooks, negotiation tactics, and "Ask" materials to be shared with vendors during negotiations
- Partner to train Merchants on leveraging Dead Net Profit, negotiation tactics, etc.
- Identify sales, cost, and margin opportunities across SKUs and vendors through rigorous analysis and research, including: competitive benchmarking (space, brands, SKUs), market insights, customer insights (eg, surveys, Customer analytics), vendor insight (cost structures, motivations), and extensive SKU/brand/vendor-level analysis (relative productivity, profitability, brand loyalty, SKU transferability, etc.).
- Monitor vendor performance and ensure alignment with strategic business goals and performance metrics are consistently met
- Establish processes to ensure that Petco is not receiving cost increases that are unjustified (e.g. relative to commodity price movements), and that Petco receives cost decreases commensurate with commodity price drops. Ensure that contracts include provisions to prevent cost increases or claw backs from vendors.
- Partner with Merchants, Merchandise Planning, Accounting to execute of vendor performance agreements (VPA) and to ensure vendor compliance with VPA terms. Partner to ensure savings are captured in the systems.
- Lead or assist in negotiations, leveraging analytics and fact-based insights to drive cost savings.
- Partner with Merchants and Sourcing to ensure that vendors meet their contractual obligations.
- Partner to develop annual plans and budgets for category strategy & margin improvement, working with the Merchandising leadership team.
- Work on special projects, ad hoc analysis, and initiatives related to assortment performance and cost reduction and management.
- Influence Merchant negotiation strategy and timing for renewals. Influence Merchant and Sourcing selection of strategic suppliers
- Partner with Merchants, Sourcing, Accounting, FP&A, Merchandise Planning, Demand Planning to facilitate cross category collaboration to enhance negotiation leverage and strengthen cohesion between category merchants, sourcing managers, and other key stakeholders.
- Partner with Product and IT to enhance documentation, archiving, and audit processes for agreements with vendors.
- Establish goals, track progress, and report out number of renegotiations successfully completed, total savings realized from re-negotiations, vendor performance against key metrics (e.g., delivery, quality, compliance)
- Provide excellent customer service to Merchandising organization through analysis, execution, and verification.
- Drive collaboration and deliver a service-oriented working environment with the primary focus on providing excellent service to Merchants, actively involving them in the process and leveraging everyone's expertise to achieve the best possible outcome;emphasize cooperation, shared responsibility, and a customer-centric approach to problem-solving

- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels; including executive leadership, stakeholders, and external contractors / suppliers.
- Ability to create the case for change and help drive and manage the change with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to solve problems by assessing the situation, leveraging and analyzing relevant data, identifying root cause and developing potential solutions.
- Makes informed decisions, demonstrates initiative, and acts with autonomy to execute initiatives.
- High level of agility and adaptability; ability to quickly learn details of new business challenges and identify dependencies and impacts of other key initiatives.
- Ability to develop and grow team of Strategic Vendor Management Analysts
Qualifications
- 4-year degree; Finance and/or other quantitative analytical degree a plus
- 2-4 years in Strategic Vendor Management or directly related role. Preferred: experience in either management consulting or retail/CPG. Specific experience in management consulting or retail category management, CPG, vendor management, or sourcing a STRONG PLUS
- Proven track record driving and delivering results.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail, with minimal direction
- Project Management skills with the ability to multi-task
- Ability to guide and influence Merchants, Sourcing, FP&A, Merchandise Planning, Senior Leadership, by displaying knowledge on detailed subject matter, while being able to communicate concisely and confidently
- Demonstrated experience in cost reduction initiatives and process optimization
- Ability to conduct complex quantitative analysis and build analytical models using Microsoft Excel
- Strong understanding of retail merchandising basics (ie, category management), merchandising organizational structures and processes, vendor management end-to-end processes

Actual pay rates will depend on factors such as position, location, level of experience, and applicable state or local minimum wage laws. If the regulatory minimum wage exceeds the minimum indicated in the pay range below, the regulatory minimum wage will be the minimum rate applied.
$101,900.00 - $152,800.00/ year
