Norfolk State University is seeking an Assistant Vice President for Campus Life and Diversity to provide leadership and vision for co-curricular programs and initiatives that promote the diversity and inclusion of all students at NSU. The Assistant Vice President for Campus and Life Diversity will report to the Vice President for Student Affairs. The AVPCLD will be responsible for coordinating the divisional effort to provide a cohesive, coordinated, and highly satisfying campus life experience for all students. This includes the intentional collaboration of Housing and Residence Life and Student Activities and Leadership. The AVPCLD will also be in charge of the oversight of divisional staff development to include issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity.

Additional duties and responsibilities include:

  • Provide fiscal oversight of Band, Choir, Theatre, and Dance.
  • Monitor and certify student elections.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, support university affirmative action and equal opportunity goals and objectives, and affirm inclusion as a fundamental value of the department.
  • Develop a partnership with Human Resources, specific to Staff Recruitment and Development.
  • Ensure staff is providing responsiveness and service to students across the student experience.
  • Develop and maintain a strategic plan and assessment program for student diversity and inclusion.
  • Promote, coordinate, and evaluate diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of diversity training and education for the Division of Student Affairs on an annual basis.
  • Responsible for Staff/Professional development for the Division of Student Affairs.
  • Responsible for the development of Diversity Initiative/training for students based on research and needs assessment.

Minimum Qualifications

1. At least 5 years of related experience in a university setting.

2. Ability to integrate diversity and inclusion work with student development theories and practice knowledge of best practices in leadership development and cultural competency training.

3. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.

4. Excellent public speaking skills.

5. Experience interacting with faculty, staff, students, and administration.

6. Supervisory experience.

7. Ability to work independently and to delegate responsibilities.

8. Ability to problem-solve and manage conflict.

9. Master’s degree

Preferred Qualifications

1. Advanced degree in a relevant discipline.

2. Involved regionally or nationally in professional associations within higher education.

3. Previous experience at an HBCU.
