Posting Summary

The Kaelber lab is recruiting a scientist to work on the development of methodological improvements in cryoelectron microscopy, including specimen preparation, multi-modal correlative techniques, and imaging. This position will involve significant collaborations with academic institutions and industry collaborators. Training will be provided in cutting-edge cryogenic ultramicroscopy technologies including cryoFIB. Mentorship of 1-2 undergraduate students will be encouraged.
The Kaelber lab is located in the Institute for Quantitative Biomedicine, home to several experts in cryoEM and in molecular dynamics. The building is shared with the RCSB Protein Data Bank (PDB). Prof. Kaelber also directs the Rutgers New Jersey Cryo-electron Microscopy & Tomography Core Facility, which contains three electron microscopes including North America’s first “Aquilos 2”-model cryogenic focused ion beam/scanning electron microscope.

Minimum Education and Experience

Terminal degree in the physical sciences, engineering, or life sciences (e.g., PhD, DSc, Eng.D.).

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Applicants must have the following technical skills:
• Track record of successful instrument design and construction
• Experience with low-temperature cryogenic systems
• Experience with nanoimaging modalities
• History of fine-grained, quantitative measurements.
Additionally required skills are:
• Commitment to ethical conduct of research
• Self-motivation and independence
• Good documentation habits
• Proficiency with Unix command line
• A track record of productive, “wet-lab” results

Equipment Utilized

Cryo-transmission electron microscope; cryo-focused ion beam; cryo-scanning electron microscope; cryo-fluorescence microscope; biosafety cabinet; ultracentrifuge; plate reader; vitrification robot

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Experiments require fine manual dexterity for manipulation of small objects under cryogenic conditions, and vision in low light conditions.
