The Dental Assisting Instructor will adhere to the general faculty guidelines as specified by the College Policies and Procedures Manual, Dental Assisting Department policies and procedures, the Dean of Nursing and Allied Health, and the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees. The Dental Assisting Instructor is responsible for the planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom and laboratory instruction and related activities. The instructor is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on any Coastal Alabama Community College campus as assigned. At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, instructional counseling, academic advising, serving on various committees, and participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
At a minimum, the essential functions of the Dental Assisting Instructor shall
include:
  • The ability to teach effectively.

  • Teaching lecture, lab, and clinical dental assisting courses as needed.

  • Developing curriculum, planning, and organizing dental assisting program courses in coordination with the Director of Dental Assisting, and/or Dean of Nursing and Allied Health to ensure compliance with state adopted curriculum and to ensure state and national testing subjects are adequately addressed.

  • Supervising clinical and adjunct instructors and assisting with the hiring of adjunct instructors as assigned by the Director of Dental Assisting and/or Dean of Nursing and Allied Health.

  • Planning, organizing, and instructing courses in the day, evening, or on weekends on any Coastal Alabama Community College campus or work site.

  • Assisting in implementing College policies, objectives, and functions in accordance with College philosophy and procedures.

  • Keeping active at a high level of expertise in the subjects taught and stimulating enthusiasm for those subjects.

  • Recommending textbooks and other instructional materials including classroom and laboratory equipment to the Director of Dental Assisting. Related functions include participating in the College’s library collection of development by selecting, evaluating, and weeding library resources in each

  • appropriate discipline.

  • Keeping students informed about their progress through the prompt grading of papers, projects, skill assessments, and other work.

  • Working closely with the Director of Dental Assisting on the development of annual Division budgets for approval by the Dean of Nursing and Allied Health.

  • Conducting class evaluations and completing other College evaluations in accordance with College policy.

  • Assisting with College registrations.

  • Serving as an academic advisor to assigned students.

  • Posting and maintaining office hours for student consultations.

  • Assisting in recruitment and retention of students.

  • Ensuring that assigned classes are held as scheduled.

  • Planning each unit or lesson, both as to content and method, to make class time meaningful.

  • Organizing each course taught into an effective instrument of learning.

  • Studying and utilizing the characteristics of the students in each class in order to facilitate the best teaching and learning methods.

  • Maximizing the learning opportunities for each student.

  • Holding the final exam at the designated time scheduled according to the Final Exam schedule.

  • Striving for the qualities delineated in the criteria for faculty evaluation used by the College.

  • Referring to counselors (including Student Support Services) reports on all students who need counseling.

  • File an appropriate course syllabus and/or course outline with the Director of Dental Assisting and the Dean of Nursing and Allied Health for each course taught.

  • Submitting all required reports, keeping accurate class rolls, and submitting attendance verification as required in OneACCS.

  • Attending all faculty meetings, College assemblies, professional development, orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Dean of Nursing and Allied Health, or Director.

  • Keeping informed of current trends and new approaches to instruction via

  • professional development activities.

  • Making suggestions to the Director of Dental Assisting, the Instructional Affairs Committee, and the Dean of Nursing and Allied Health concerning the improvement of the curriculum in keeping with the objectives of the College.

  • Becoming thoroughly familiar and complying with all College policies and procedures.

  • Serving on and providing information to the College committees and divisional committees as needed.

  • Being actively involved in the co-curricular activities of the College.

  • Represent the College in a positive manner both on and off campus.

  • All other duties as assigned by the Director of Dental Assisting, Dean of Nursing and Allied Health, or the President or his/her designee.

  • Becoming familiar with and adhering to all College policies and procedures.

  • Becoming thoroughly familiar with all pertinent state and national policies and complying with said policies.

  • Serving on and providing information to College committees as needed.

  • Maintaining a highly professional attitude and demeanor at all times.

  • Exhibiting appropriate and satisfactory leadership within the College.

  • Complying with ACCS and College policies, as well as state and federal laws.

  • Providing responsible, adequate, and satisfactory leadership on the campus and within the College.

  • Communicating positively and professionally in all aspects of the position.

  • Ensuring the positive promotion of the College and integration of all campuses within the College.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Becoming familiar with and adhering to all College policies and procedures.

  • Becoming thoroughly familiar with all pertinent state and national policies and complying with said policies.

  • Serving on and providing information to College committees as needed.

  • Maintaining a highly professional attitude and demeanor at all times.

  • Exhibiting appropriate and satisfactory leadership within the College.

  • Complying with ACCS and College policies, as well as state and federal laws.

  • Providing responsible, adequate, and satisfactory leadership on the campus and within the College.

  • Communicating positively and professionally in all aspects of the position.

  • SALARY: Appropriate placement on the Alabama Community College System Salary Schedule D1.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Interviews can only be extended to applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who complete the application process. The following are the minimum required qualifications for this position:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • is required.

  • Dental Assisting National Board-Certified Dental Assistant with occupational experience in application of fourhanded dentistry principles
  • is required.

  • Current knowledge of dental assisting with a minimum of five (5) years working experience as a Certified Dental Assistant
  • are required.

  • Instruction in educational theory and methodology (curriculum development, educational psychology, test construction, measurement and evaluation) i
  • s required.

  • Computer skills, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • is required.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Alabama Registered Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene i
  • s preferred.

    INTERVIEW PROCESS:
    The President will appoint a Screening and Interview Committee to include representatives of the College faculty and staff. This committee will employ appropriate procedures, including the review of application packets, interview, and demonstration of competency, to determine which applicants are to be recommended to the President for further consideration. From all the applications received, a screening committee will select the applicants to be interviewed. All initial interviews will be conducted in person and applicants must travel at their own expense.
