Primary Purpose:
Assist with the day-to-day operations of the bookstore. Operate cash registers, perform associated cashiering duties, and provide customer service to staff, students and college visitors. Assist other bookstore staff with projects, as needed.
Terms of Employment:
  • This is a part-time (<.50 FTE) Temporary Hourly/Non-Benefited position
  • Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district when needed.
  • COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.
  • The College is NOT able to support Visa applications for this position. Applicants must already be eligible to work in the United States to be considered for this position.
  • Upon hire, must pass criminal and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions:

1. Operate computerized cash register system.
2. Balance cash, checks and daily receipts.
3. Greet customers and provide customer service, both in person and on the phone.
4. Assist regular staff with stocking food and beverage, merchandise and textbooks, as needed.
5. Assist customers with pulling and purchasing their required course materials from the textbook area.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidates must possess the listed knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The incumbent is expected to follow College work rules and policies.

1. Visual ability to read price tag information. Ability to read the English language sufficient to read customer checks, customer identification, the computer screen, and other similar written materials.
2. Basic English language writing skills for completion of payment processing, customer checks, and paperwork involved in balancing the cash register.
3. Basic mathematical skills, including addition and subtraction, necessary to verify cash register functions, balance cash register, make change, and assist with inventory counts.
4. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times and exercise a high level of professionalism, tact and diplomacy.
5. Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
6. Sufficient manual dexterity in at least one hand to be able to operate all cash registers and electronic equipment and manually complete paperwork; and to unload, price, and stack merchandise.
7. Ability to communicate with others using the English language, with or without the use of an interpreter.
8. Visual ability, corrected, to enable the cashier to observe at a distance of 30 yards and to verify customer identification and read computer monitor and cashiering forms at close range.
9. Willingness to work scheduled hours as required during the seasons of rush, finals, and other seasonally peak periods.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

All individuals are required to be able to perform essential functions without a significant risk of injury or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.

Work is performed in an open area setting. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to function effectively indoors in an open environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature with the majority of time spent sitting or standing at workstation for extended periods and moderate lifting. The employee is regularly required reach, bend, lift, stoop, crouch, and perform similar physical functions while processing orders and waiting on customers. Work also requires long periods of standing, sitting, use of hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Able to lift or transport goods up to 25lbs. Computer screen is used more than 50 percent of the time. Occasionally, student contact can be hostile. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High School diploma or GED completed or in progress, or equivalent work experience.
The college recognizes the value of skills and knowledge gained outside of formal higher education and paid employment. Applicants who do not meet minimum qualifications but present other qualifications or experience equivalent to those required will be considered and are encouraged to apply. To qualify under equivalency, applicants must indicate how they qualify under equivalency by responding to the supplemental question presented during the application process.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Prior computerized point of sale and cash handling experience preferred.
