Summary of Position:
The position of the Director of Advising / Transfer / and Tutoring Services exists to
manage all operational aspects of the supplemental learning services and Academic
Advising Center of the College, including supervision of professional advisors, support
staff and budget development and administration in accordance with the Council for the
Advancement of Standards (CAS) in higher education. The Advising Department and
Tutoring Services supports the RRCC priorities of ‘retention’ and ‘successful completion’
of its students through proactive academic advising, 4-year college transfer assistance,
and comprehensive tutoring support services.
- A Master’s Degree in Ed Administration, Counseling, College Student Personnel
or related field.
o Substitution: An equivalent combination of education and professional
work experience in academic, educational, or administrative field. Must
have a minimum of 60 college credits. Experience is in addition to any
required prior professional work experience.
- Five years of professional management experience in an area of Student
Success, Advising or Supplemental Instruction in an academic setting.
- Six months experience serving as a member of a crisis intervention/early alert
- Experience in an academic support program.
- Membership in or experience working in diverse communities and supporting the
success of students and staff from racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds that
are underrepresented in the College.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Excellent decision-making, conflict resolution, collaboration and facilitation
- Verbal and written communication skills including the ability to present
information to individuals and groups and to give and receive conceptual or
emotionally charged information.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deal with ambiguity. Collaborate with
multiple constituencies, develop consensus and find creative ways to develop
and fund new initiatives. Proven record of innovation in meeting student
Description of Position
- Develop and oversee a comprehensive Advising/Transfer/Tutoring services
department. Coordinate the activities of the department to provide students
with accurate academic planning and transfer information. Ensure students
are provided consistent, accurate and prompt advising and transfer services
in coordination with academic departments.
- Oversee and manage all support services provided by the Learning Success
Services; Connect to Success, Tutoring, the College Prep Zone, and The
Learning Collaborative. Align these services with the
Advising/Transfer/Tutoring Services department.
- Within the context of student success, set strategic goals, make decisions,
recommendations, based on research and the input obtained from the
appropriate constituencies within the College (Academic Affairs, Admissions,
Registrar, Career Services, First Year Experience).
- Participate as an active member of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT),
provide aid as needed when responding to students of concern; assist with
Maxient system and consult with BIT on behavioral cases.
- In collaboration with the Vice President for Student Services, develops and
maintains department budgets, files, and procedures related to the
department(s). Serve as fiscal manager for Academic Advising, Transfer, and
- Identify and create processes and systems that streamline all academic
advising, transfer, and tutoring functions.
- Serve as a liaison with Instructional Services to assure an accurate exchange
of course and program updates, keeping the academic advisors apprised of
- Assess students requests for drops and withdrawals
- Provide oversight of the Academic Early program and the work of the
Academic Early Alert Navigator.
- Serve as member of the Student Success Leadership Team.
