With a mission of creating equal opportunities for children with hearing loss through listening and spoken language, Hear Indiana works directly with over 1,000 families each year. The organization is a well-regarded and financially sound nonprofit organization, based in Indianapolis and principally serving central Indiana, but also touching other areas in the state. Hear Indiana is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2021. The agency’s CEO for the past several years has decided to leave the organization in the fall of 2021 in order to spend more time with family and resume the provision of clinical services.

Through the delivery of clinical services, advocacy, education, and financial aid, Hear Indiana helps children with hearing loss learn to listen and talk. As such, Hear Indiana is dedicated to helping individuals, families, health care providers, and education professionals understand childhood hearing loss and the importance of early diagnosis and intervention.

Hear Indiana is staffed by ~13 employees and 1 contract worker (i.e., the finance director). About 20 volunteers serve on the board and/or committees. Its current annual budget is ~$1.6 million. The organization is supported by contracts, individual donors, grants, corporate sponsorships, registration fees, and fundraising events. The organization's strategic priorities are: expand state funding for services, expand the delivery of services throughout Indiana, develop a community of people who are supporters of Hear Indiana and its work, and expand the role of philanthropy to better serve Indiana’s residents with hearing loss.

Programs and Services

Hear Indiana’s specific programs, services, and events include:

  • Speech and Hearing Resource Center-- a one-stop shop which provides quality pediatric audiology, spoken-language therapy, parent support, & advocacy.
  • Annual Listening and Spoken Language Conference on the topic of oral deaf education.
  • An annual week-long overnight Listening and Spoken Language Camp for children with hearing loss.
  • Monthly family Hear INcouragement Nights.
  • Annual fundraising events: Run for Sound, Amplifier Awards.
  • Financial assistance through the Hearing Aid Assistance Program of Indiana (HAAPI) which the agency administers for the state.
  • Case reviews and school consultations.
  • Advocacy at the state and local levels.
  • Public awareness and outreach efforts.
  • Programs for deaf and hard of hearing children and their families.

Position Summary

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) reports to and works closely with the Board of Directors in executing the strategic plan of Hear Indiana. In concert with the Hear Indiana Board members, paid staff members and unpaid volunteers, the CEO will be a dynamic spokesperson who advocates for those with hearing loss and will champion Hear Indiana’s mission. The CEO will help drive efforts to raise money from a variety of sources and communicate to a broad constituency the organization’s purpose and programs. In addition, the CEO will coordinate and direct the efforts of ~13 employees. In concert with these employees and the Board, the CEO will ensure continued success of Hear Indiana’s new and ongoing programs, and key signature events.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will have:

  • The ability to work constructively with the Board of Directors.
  • Demonstrated success in leading a complex organization.
  • A minimum of five years of experience managing organizational fiscal, programmatic and operational components; and/or relevant experience in an advocacy leadership role. (Nonprofit experience is highly desirable.)
  • Demonstrated success in helping to develop strategic fundraising programs and growth initiatives with proven success in raising funds and expanding development efforts into new areas through effective marketing and public relations skills.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to quickly master, the state's policy and political issues related to hearing loss/deafness, hearing health, and listening and spoken language education options. Knowledge of Indiana laws and federal policies pertaining to the organization’s mission is strongly desirable.
  • Demonstrated success in working effectively with external constituents such as families of children with hearing loss, other providers, state agency personnel, legislators and others.
  • The ability to think strategically with a propensity for delivering projects and managing inherent challenges.
  • The ability to establish direction, make informed decisions about operations and infrastructure in order to further the organization’s objectives.
  • A passion for the cause.


Bachelor's degree is required, advanced degree is preferred. Examples include Masters in Business Administration, Non-profit Management, or similar degree in a subject relevant to the work of Hear Indiana (e.g., SLP, AuD). Additional helpful certifications would include CFRE and LSLS Cert. AVT.

Other Requirements

  • Reside in central Indiana,
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a car,
  • Excellent computer skills,
  • Strong oral and written communication skills,
  • Routine work outside of a traditional 40-hour work week, and
  • Occasional travel, mostly within Indiana, may be required

Specific Duties

Working with the Board of Directors

  • Foster Board relationships and overall Board effectiveness in concert with the Board Chair and provide support and advice to the Board in leading the organization to its institutional goals.
  • Participate in monthly Board/Executive Board meetings, and committee meetings as necessary.


  • Oversee financial and human resource management and communicate status effectively to the Board. Ensure that appropriate fiscal controls and procedures are in place to ensure transparency and accountability. Ensure that available resources are allocated appropriately to manage the mission of Hear Indiana.
  • Provide operational leadership and managerial oversight to staff, and develop a business-like culture that supports the execution of the organization’s strategic direction.
  • Help develop, communicate, and implement the organization’s goals, priorities, and objectives.
  • Lead the development of new programs and enhance existing programs to support Hear Indiana’s mission.
  • Work to make the Speech and Hearing Resource Center services sustainable for the long run.
  • Assist in the development of a strong and committed service-oriented staff and volunteer base. The CEO will help to assess the internal structure, staff functions, operations and systems; ensure ongoing improvement of efficiency, professionalism, and morale; build relationships of trust, responsibility, and accountability while instilling a feeling of partnership and cohesion within the organization.
  • Attend all major Hear Indiana events.


  • Build strong internal/external relationships and alliances that promote Hear Indiana’s mission, specifically in regards to sponsorship, grants, and other donor initiatives.
  • Provide leadership in creating a sound fundraising strategy. The CEO will guide the planning and effective execution of 1) innovative ways of raising money from individual donors, foundations, and corporations, 2) the solicitation and cultivation of major donors, and 3) the tracking of donations and member relationship activities.


  • Oversee the creation of marketing plans that generate gifts-in-kind, corporate sponsorships and partnerships, and other levels of support for the organization.
  • Promote effective public relations and outreach marketing programs and serve as the principal advocate and spokesperson for the organization’s mission, programs, and services.
  • Build and maintain relationships with other organization leaders and legislators to continue to create a broad base of support.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • Hear Indiana provides a $3,000 annual wellness bonus whether or not the employee elects to enroll in health care coverage. This is paid out as $250 per pay period.
  • Hear Indiana budgets $3,000 annually for continued education.
  • In lieu of accruing and tracking PTO, the CEO has unlimited PTO and does not track time off.
  • Clinic staff work 10-hour days, Monday-Thursday. The development staff work 8-hour days, Monday-Friday.
  • Hear Indiana recognizes nine paid holidays and typically gifts the week of Christmas to all staff members.
