Job Type/Schedule

This position is full-time and is funded for up to two years. Intended starting date is July 1, 2021; the position will run for the 2021-2022 academic years, ending on June 30, 2023. Subject to Covid-19 restrictions and potential visa requirements.

Must have reliable transportation and be willing to travel to the Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center (WERDCC) in Vandalia, Missouri, about one-hundred miles from St. Louis and to the Department of Corrections Offices in Jefferson City, as needed.

Essential Functions


The Prison Education Project (PEP) at Washington University (WU) in St. Louis invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship to support the expansion of education and programming to one of Missouri’s women’s prisons, the Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center (WERDCC) in Vandalia, Missouri, about one-hundred miles from St. Louis. PEP is a liberal arts degree program available to incarcerated students and prison staff at the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center (MECC) in Pacific, MO. PEP aims to bring WU’s intellectual rigor and educational standards to help qualifying incarcerated students earn college degrees and realize successful reentry into the community.

This expansion is made possible by The Future of Higher Learning in Prison Mellon grant. This grant includes the development of a learning management system (LMS) that will not only provide a robust educational platform for the existing PEP program at MECC, but also offer the opportunity to expand educational offerings at the more distant women’s prison.



  • Works with the warden at WERDCC and various officials at the Missouri Department of Corrections in order to establish the new program.
  • Collaborates closely with PEP Director and Program Coordinator and other relevant PEP personnel.
  • Ensures the availability of classroom space at WERDCC and regular access to it.
  • Develops relationships with the Institutional Activities Coordinator, the Director of Education at WERDCC, and/or other relevant personnel at the prison.
  • Offers outreach programs to the residents at WERDCC while the program is being established. This could include college preparatory workshops, reading groups, and other educational activities.
  • Plans and coordinates student admissions at WERDCC.
  • Collaborates closely with PEP Director and Program Coordinator to implement volunteer orientations/trainings for faculty, tutors, and/or academic advisors.
  • Designs outreach program to increase awareness of the staff educational opportunities offered by PEP.
  • Provides oversight of the implementation of the new LMS and other technology planned for WERDCC.
  • Takes all necessary steps to become a “Volunteer in Corrections,” which includes an application, drug testing, and training, all administered by the DOC.
  • Regularly drives to WERDCC, with additional trips to Jefferson City, as needed.
  • Teaches one class per year as soon as the program is established.

  • Required Qualifications

    Ph.D. degree in the humanities (field open).

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Some training or course work in women, gender, and sexuality studies.
    • Previous experience working with justice-impacted individuals.

    Salary Range

    Base pay commensurate with experience.
