JOB SUMMARY
A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Department of Physiology and Neurobiology at the University of Connecticut in the Shin Laboratory to study epigenetic regulation of energy metabolism and physiology.  In particular, the laboratory investigates the role of microRNAs and epigenetic regulators in the development of non-alcoholic and alcoholic fatty liver disease, steatohepatitis, liver fibrosis, and cholestasis. 
The goals of the projects are to unravel the molecular mechanisms and the physiological functions of microRNAs and the regulators in the pathogenesis of liver diseases.  We employ a multidisciplinary approach integrating molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, genomics, and physiology to tackle the questions in genetically engineered mouse models and isolated cells.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
I.  Design and execute research experiments
  • Conduct mentored and guided research projects independently and cooperatively with other lab members
  • Plan, organize, and perform experiments in vivo and in vitro
  • Conduct molecular and biochemical bench work
II.  Data analysis
  • Analyze and present data and discuss results and relevant literature
  • Attend and participate in scientific meetings
  • Draft scientific manuscripts
III.  Other duties
  • Supervise junior lab members and serve as a role model in the lab
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D. in life sciences, biomedical sciences or a related field
  • Self-motivated individuals with excellent organizational skills
  • Willingness to learn new experimental techniques, tools, and approaches
  • Strong background in molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, and or cell biology
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working with small laboratory animals including mice
  • Previous experience in epigenetics and metabolic diseases
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate successfully on teams and work independently
  • Excellent communication skills and critical thinking skills
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This position is a full time, 12-month appointment.  The position may be annually renewable based on performance, budget and needs of the department and college.
