Hazard Community & Technical College invites applications for the position of Chief Student Affairs Officer. Responsible to the President, the successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of current issues in Student Affairs and significant leadership experience including demonstrated experience working cohesively and collaboratively with other units at the college including academic services, information technology, and business services, among others. The candidate must have a demonstrated passion for working with a diverse student body (dual credit, traditional, and non-traditional students) and a commitment to student development. The candidate will have demonstrated success in leading creative and innovative initiatives that lead to student success including retention efforts. Must possess an understanding of a comprehensive community college and contribute to the development and implementation of the college’s strategic plan, institutional effectiveness, and enrollment management.

Duties:

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Management of the personnel of the Student Affairs unit to include the following areas: Admissions, Financial Aid, Records, Retention, Veterans, Disability Services, Testing and several grants including Ready to Work and Upward Bound.

Serve as a member of the President’s Leadership Team and advise the President on major policy issues and decisions affecting student programming to support enrollment, retention, graduation, transfer, internships, and job placement.

Establishing strategic direction and leading the Student Affairs unit to achieve both immediate and long-term institutional goals. This includes working with the President to shape and implement key initiatives in the College’s strategic plan.

Strengthening advising for all students and ensuring that HCTC is meeting the particular needs of first-generation college students and students from other underrepresented groups. (This will require close partnership with the Academic Services.)

Responsible for the fiscal management of Student Affairs unit.

Working closely with Student Affairs Staff to create a seamless student experience from the first communication to graduation.

Working with the President to design and implement innovative strategies that lead to student success in a welcoming and authentically diverse community of learning and social interaction in which all perspectives are valued.

Qualifications:

The Chief Student Affairs Officer will recognize and appreciate the value of HCTC’s culture and community. The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and experience:

  • Masters or equivalent with a minimum of four years of recent, senior-level administrative experience in student affairs, and/or within a college or university setting is preferred.
  • Exceptional judgment and the ability to make decisions and recommendations with the highest levels of integrity, fairness, and ethical standards.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Enthusiasm about working in an environment that encourages and empowers students, and the belief that with the right support, students are highly capable of leading.
  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to listen, calm, persuade, influence, empathize and educate.
  • Experience and comfort with both making difficult, high-profile decisions under pressure and advising those who do.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering excellence, encouraging innovation and experimentation in design and delivery of student services and programming.
  • Shared commitment to the institution’s values of inclusion and respect for all and understanding of the needs of a diverse student body.

Hazard Community and Technical College is one of sixteen separately accredited colleges that comprise the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). The college operates six campuses/sites and serves ten multiple counties in southeastern Kentucky.
