TEAM: Communications and Public Affairs

REPORTS TO: Vice President, National Communications

LOCATION: Flexible

THE ROLE

The Communications and Public Affairs team seeks a Director of Content Development to support internal and external content creation for Teach For America’s National Communications team. The Director will report to the VP, National Communications and will work closely with the Press Office and other national teams of the organization. The Director will be responsible for drafting and creating content that supports the work of the organization – this can include: press releases, talking points, social media content, statements, emails, and language for presentations. The Director will be responsible for supporting the Press Secretary in responding to media requests and developing pitches, as well as externally sharing the story of other national teams including the Office, Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness, National Community Alliances, Teacher Leadership Development, Public Partnerships, Development, and Organizational Wide Learning teams. Along with the Senior Managing Director, Press Secretary and Director, Speechwriter, the Director, Content Development will support the organization’s social media strategy as it relates to our press strategy.

THE ORGANIZATION

There are more than 16 million children growing up in poverty in the U.S., and less than 10 percent of them will graduate from college. These statistics are not a reflection of our children’s potential; we know that children growing up in poverty can and do achieve at the highest levels. Rather, these statistics reflect the systemic lack of access and opportunity for children in low-income communities.

THE PERSON

Content Creation (50%)

  • Draft press releases, media advisories, and statements on behalf of the organization, its national teams, and in support of our Press Secretary

  • Develop tools, templates, presentations, and talking points in support of the National Communications team and national team partners

  • Draft internal and external email message content

  • Copyedit press materials written by the Press Secretary and VP, National Communications

  • Create social media content across platforms in support of the national press strategy, primarily for Twitter and LinkedIn

Media Relations Operations (30%)

  • Support the Press Secretary’s efforts

  • Manage Teach For America’s inbox for media inquiries, The Press Center

  • Maintain the national press list and pull new media lists as needed from Cision

  • Track national media coverage in TFACT, Teach For America’s CRM

  • Establish a process for amplifying positive coverage through social media, The Briefing, internal Slack channels, and through partnership with the Regional Communications team

  • Work in partnership with the Marketing and One Day Studio team to post communications content onto teachforamerica.org

  • Update national communications tools and templates on Homeroom to ensure the organization has access to timely communications guidance

  • Support the communications team in integrating content across the External Affairs team

THE MUST HAVES

Experience:

  • Communications experience (press release and social media) required

  • Minimum of 2-5 years communications experience preferred

  • Some experience and familiarity with leadership development and education preferred

Skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication; synthesizing thoughts into clear and concise communications; proficiency in PowerPoint; proficiency in Google suite

  • Ability to work collaboratively in complex organizational environments, influence others in and across management lines, and develop strong internal and external relationships

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment related to organizational and interpersonal dynamics, and adjust communications accordingly

  • Interest and ability to engage with diverse stakeholders on a range of topics including cultural competence, diversity and equity issues, board-related matters, and priorities affecting our students and families

  • Comfort operating flexibly in environments of change, ambiguity and uncertainty

  • Ability to manage workload effectively and following through on execution

THE TEAM

The National Communications team is part of the Communications and Public Affairs team. This new team is charged with driving our national impact narrative and voice and defining an stewarding integrated communications and media strategy across TFA.
